Argentina's President Has Cancer

Death leaves current president Cristina Fernandez a widow

(NEWSER) - Nestor Kirchner, Argentina's former and probable future president, and husband of current President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has died today of a heart attack. He was 60. Kirchner, widely expected to run for the presidency next year, had undergone two heart procedures earlier this year, reports Reuters. Kirchner was his wife's closest adviser and a political force of nature in Argentina, having been the architect of his country's emergence from economic crisis during his 2003-2007 tenure. More?

(AP) ? Cheetah, the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s, has died at age 80 a Florida animal sanctuary said.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She said he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films, which starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb said Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb said Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest said that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Oil price above $101 as consumer confidence rises

(AP) ? The price of crude oil climbed above $101 a barrel in light holiday trading on growing U.S. consumer confidence and tension in the Middle East.

Benchmark crude rose $1.66 on Tuesday to end at $101.34 per barrel in New York.

Brent crude rose $1.31 to finish at $109.27 per barrel in London.

Prices have risen in the past week as encouraging U.S. economic news pointed to stronger future demand. The New York-based Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index jumped almost 10 points from November, to 64.5. That level hasn't been seen since April and was near a post-recession peak.

Higher confidence is in line with retail reports of a decent holiday shopping season. Retailers saw a surge of shopping the week before Christmas, and the National Retail Federation now expects a 3.8 percent increase in holiday sales, up from its a forecast of 2.8 percent in September.

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the U.S. economy, so more spending could boost growth and demand for oil. Consumers have cut back in recent years because of uncertainty about the economy, fed by a weak jobs market and a stagnant housing sector. Gasoline demand has been steadily declining since spring.

Tensions in the Middle East also boosted oil prices. Iran has threatened to block oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest routes for crude shipments, if the West tries to embargo Iran's oil exports. The Iranian navy currently is conducting exercises in the region. About a third of the world's oil passes through the narrow strait. The U.S., The U.K. and other nations have talked about more sanctions against Iran as part of an effort to clamp down on its nuclear program.

Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer, according to the Energy Department. Much of its oil is sold to customers in Asia. If tankers could not use the Strait of Hormuz, they would have to take longer, more expensive routes to their destinations.

In other energy trading in New York, natural gas was virtually unchanged at $3.1120 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil rose 2 cents to finish at $2.9085 a gallon, and gasoline futures were flat at $2.6888 a gallon.

95% Weekend

All Critics (66) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (61) | Rotten (3)

It's a definitive example of naturalistic moviemaking -- you feel you're breathing the air that the characters are breathing.

Its final moments offer a vision of what a contemporary romance can achieve: an appreciative gasp of truth, a wet-eyed hope for more.

One of the truest, most beautiful movies ever made about two strangers.

If you've ever met someone who changed your life in the space of days, you'll relate to something in this movie.

The organ that "Weekend" is most concerned with isn't the one you might think, but the human heart.

In just a short period of time, a weekend hookup tests the boundaries each man has set for himself.

Part of the brilliance of Haigh's film is how specific the characterizations are of his two main characters, how their different natures both allow for the possibility of love and impede it.

Deserves to find a place in the hearts of wistful romantics everywhere, no matter what their sexual preference.

It's splendidly played with an understated intensity that deftly captures the shifting emotional tone of the relationship.

Offers up the kind of subtle, truthful relationship drama that's all too rare in cinema.

There's a fresh, sweaty, honest, unpretentious air to it, and when they part, with Glen on his way to spend a year working in Portland, Oregon, we genuinely believe that something like love has come into their yearning lives.

Writer-director Andrew Haigh has a delicate, sensitive touch, and this is appealing as a simple peek into modern romance... but there's a sense of wishful thinking -- or even desperation -- that I suspect is not intended here.

There's a deceptive simplicity to British writer-director Andrew Haigh's poignant, fluent character study, which has already earned comparisons to Before Sunrise.

Haigh treats his subject matter with matter-of-fact realism. If this is a new voice on the British film scene, it's a refreshingly adult one.

It is a tender, humane film, with an easy, unforced cinematic language: a film that doesn't need to try too hard.

Haigh's film is written with a shrewd, unpretentious feel for the way young people behave when they're getting to know each other, shot with a keen eye for urban solitude, and completely nails its seemingly modest tasks...

Haigh, writing, directing and producing, drives through the meeting-cute introductions and the medium-molten sex scenes as if they were merely marks on the map, to follow the simple, complex arc of an evolving love affair.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging and strikingly naturalistic romantic drama with terrific central performances from newcomers Tom Cullen and Chris New.

A remarkable film that signals an exciting new voice in the LGBT landscape.

Sexy, provocative, engrossing and occasionally ornery, it should appeal to anyone whose curiosity about someone new has provoked them to question their own identity.

Terrific low-key turns from the two leads inject their growing bond with genuine emotion, making this a love story that will get under the skin of romantics everywhere.

Cullen and New are British stage actors with little background in film. Haigh's only previous film was a documentary. Perhaps because they don't feel bound by a set of rules, they've created one of the year's most enjoyable surprises.

Weekend is the year's wittiest hymn to romance.

Noisy Toys Might Harm Kids' Hearing (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Some toys at the top of children's Christmas wish lists could pose a hearing threat, according to researchers.

They measured the noise levels of 24 popular toys and bought the 10 loudest to test in a soundproof booth. All 10 toys exceeded 90 decibels and several reached 100 decibels or more, which is about equal to the noise of a power mower, chain saw or subway train.

Extended, unprotected exposure to sounds above 85 decibels can lead to hearing damage, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

"Generally, toys are safe if used properly," Dr. Hamid Djalilian, an associate professor of otolaryngology and director of neurotology and skull base surgery at the University of California, Irvine, said in a university news release. "We tested the sound levels at the speaker and again at 12 inches, which is about the length of a toddler's arm."

Hearing problems may occur if a noisy toy is held too close to the ears, they found.

"Children are very sensitive to loud and high-pitched sounds. Unfortunately, hearing loss from noise damage is permanent and not currently curable," Djalilian said.

If you're buying a noisy toy for a child, pay attention to location of the speaker. It's better if the speaker is on the underside of the toy instead of on top. Djalilian also suggested you hold the toy as a child would and listen to the sound.

"If it hurts your ears then it's probably too loud for a child," he said.

Here is a list from the release of the toys tested and the decibel levels at the speaker and 12 inches from the speaker:

  • Road Rippers Lightning Rods: 108 / 68
  • I Am T-Pain microphone: 101 / 64
  • Tonka Mighty Motorized Fire Engine: 100 / 69

Chavez appoints new military intelligence chief (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has replaced his military intelligence chief.

Chavez says he is appointing Gen. Wilfredo Figueroa Chacin as the new chief of the country's military intelligence agency.

The new appointee replaces Gen. Hugo Carvajal, one of the president's most trusted security chiefs.

Carvajal was one of three close Chavez allies who in 2008 were accused by the U.S. Treasury Department of helping Colombian rebels by supplying arms and aiding drug-trafficking operations.

Chavez has denied those accusations.

The president announced the change during a speech Saturday. He did not say why he made it or what plans he has for Carvajal.

Who Won The X Factor?

It all boiled down to talent (Melanie Amaro) versus heart (Josh Krajcik) versus energy (Chris Rene) on the first-ever American finale of The X Factor, with a major recording contract, $5 million and serious bragging rights at stake tonight.

So, who took home the largest grand prize in reality show history?

Following an electrifying set of performances by Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Leona Lewis, Pitbull and Ne-Yo, host Steve Jones announced the winner as ...

Josh Krajcik, Melanie Amaro and Chris Rene

... Melanie Amaro!

Obviously stunned and emotionally overwhelmed just after Jones made the expected announcement, a choked up Amaro said only "GOD IS GOOD!!"

And half a million thank yous.

Simon Cowell said simply, "We came here to find a superstar, and we found a superstar ... congratulations and thank you to all who supported this show."

Chris Rene got the chop first, leaving Melanie and Josh Krajcik in the final two. Before the results were unveiled, the two dueted on David Bowie's "Heroes."

The first season finale then closed out with a performance by Melanie. She sang "Listen," a perfect choice as it was arguably her strongest effort all season.

What do you think? Did Melanie Amaro deserve to win?

Tracks Grabs $1 Million To Build ?The Experience Graph?; Adds Photobucket Founder To Its Board

Tracks LogoThe photo-sharing market is saturated, and, by and large, we don't need more players. The players that are there, if they're not leading, are trying to differentiate themselves from the rest in a host of different ways. In the case of Tracks, while it is, by makeup, a photo-sharing app, CEO Vic Singh says that the startup really isn't trying to solve a photo-sharing problem so much as its building a service where people can create small networks around shared experiences in the real world. In October, we covered the startup's launch of its iOS app, which seeks to do just that by leveraging "the experience graph" to allow users to create on-the-go group photo albums, and merge online and offline worlds by allowing users to turn those photos into printable physical photo books, and so on.

Vitamin D Prevents Fractures, But Role in Cancer Remains Unclear

News | Health

The analysis was requested by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and was the only study requested in advance of its draft statement on recommendations for vitamin D intake, set to be issued in January

Image: Flickr/julochka

Taking vitamin D, along with calcium supplements, may reduce your risk of breaking a bone, but there's not yet enough evidence to say whether it may lower your risk of cancer, a new analysis concludes.

People who were taking vitamin D and calcium supplements were 11 percent less likely to fracture a bone than people not taking the supplements, according to the study.

There was an even larger reduction in fractures ? about 30 percent ? among elderly people living in institutions who were taking vitamin D, said study researcher Mei Chung, a nutritional epidemiologist and assistant director of the evidence-based-practice center at Tufts Medical Center.

Chung's analysis was requested by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and was the only study the group requested be done in advance of their draft statement on recommendations for vitamin D intake, set to be issued in January, she said.

As to the studies examining the vitamin's role in cancer prevention, "We just don't have good enough information," Chung said, and factors such as how much vitamin D people were getting in their diets, and how much sun exposure they got were not well-controlled in the previous studies she reviewed for her analysis.

The results of the new study are published online today (Dec. 19) in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Vitamin D in the body

Vitamin D is present in very few foods, though some foods are fortified with it, according to the National institutes of Health. Fish such as salmon and tuna, and egg yolks are good sources of it. It's also synthesized by the skin when we're exposed to ultraviolet rays in sunlight.

Research has shown that vitamin D is involved with the depositing of mineral in bone, Chung said, but its potential role in cancer is less clear. Some research has suggested it may promote cell division and other processes that may lead to cancer, but other work has shown it may have the opposite effect, she said. The vitamin's effect of the vitamin may vary across different parts of the body ? it could promote some cancers, but inhibit the development of others.

Chung's analysis included 19 studies examining the effects of vitamin D on bone fractures, and 28 studies of its effects on cancer.

In terms of reducing fractures, vitamin D only reduced the risk when taken in conjunction with calcium, the study showed. The benefit was seen among people taking from 300 International Units (IU) to 1,100 IU daily, according to the study.

The studies she examined conflicted in their findings about whether vitamin D might prevent cancer, Chung said. Three of the studies were prospective randomized controlled trials ? considered the strongest type of scientific evidence, in which participants are divided into two groups at the study's start and asked to either take vitamin D or a placebo ? and these studies suggested that high doses of vitamin D (1,000 IU a day) may reduce cancer.

However, the levels of vitamin D in the blood of participants in those studies were not measured, Chung said, and without such measurements, conclusions cannot be drawn. Some people in the placebo group may have in fact been taking vitamin D supplements, perhaps as part of a multivitamin, and study participants could vary greatly in terms of the levels of vitamin D in their diets, and their sun exposure. ?

Some of the prospective, observational studies Chung analyzed ? in which researchers did measure blood levels of vitamin D, and tracked those levels with cancer cases ? suggested that people with higher levels may have a lower risk of colorectal cancer, but also showed that higher vitamin D levels brought an increased risk of having any type of cancer in general. Therefore,?a general conclusion about vitamin D and cancer risk could not be made, she said.

Prominent journalist gunned down in Russia's south (AP)

MAKHACHKALA, Russia ? The founder of a newspaper critical of authorities in the restive province of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus has died after he was gunned down in a hail of bullets outside his office, police said Friday.

Khadzhimurad Kamalov's leading independent weekly paper Chernovik (Rough Draft) has reported extensively on police abuses in the fight against an Islamist insurgency that originated in neighboring Chechnya and has spread across the region.

Kamalov founded the weekly in 2003, worked as its editor for several years and remained its publisher until his killing late Thursday. He was 46.

Vyacheslav Gasanov, a spokesman for the Russian Interior Minister in Dagestan, said a masked gunman riddled Kamalov with bullets outside the office in the provincial capital, Makhachkala. Kamalov died of his wounds at a local hospital shortly after.

Biyakai Magomedov ? the editor of Chernovik, who witnessed the attack ? said on Russia's NTV television that Kamalov fell on the pavement as he was struck by the first round, and then covered his head with hands when the assailant approached to finish him off.

"They deliberately killed him in front of the newspaper's office to scare the staff," Magomedov said.

Chechen rebels have fought two separatist wars against Russian forces since 1994. Major battles in the second war subsided about a decade ago, but the Islamist insurgency has engulfed neighboring provinces, stoked by poverty and corruption. Rights activists accuse security services of fueling the violence with arbitrary arrests, torture and extra-judicial killings of militant suspects.

Dagestan, the largest and most ethnically diverse of Russia's mostly Muslim provinces in the North Caucasus, has evolved into the main breeding ground for terror, with near daily attacks on police and other authorities.

Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot), a leading online news resource on the region, said Kamalov's name figured on a list of militants and their "accomplices" that has been released since 2009 by anonymous authors vowing to avenge the dead police and security officers.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists granted Chernovik's editor Nadira Isayeva its 2010 International Press Freedom award. CPJ hailed the paper's relentless reporting on the heavy-handed tactics of security agencies in the fight against Islamic militancy. It said Isayeva and the newspaper were regularly harassed with official summonses, financial audits and state-commissioned "linguistic analyses" that label content as extremist.

In 2008, authorities brought a criminal case against Isayeva and several other Chernovik journalists under anti-extremist legislation after she published an interview with a former guerrilla leader. A court acquitted them earlier this year.

"The corrupt structures have been afraid of us," Chernovik editor Magomedov said Friday. "They couldn't defeat us in courts, because we won practically all the cases."

International media watchdogs have ranked Russia among the world's most dangerous countries for reporters. Most attacks on journalists have remained unsolved, including the 2006 slaying of Anna Politkovskaya, who exposed atrocities against civilians by Chechnya's Moscow-backed authorities.

(AP) ? A Canadian sports doctor with a high-profile client list will avoid more prison time for bringing unapproved and mislabeled drugs into the United States.

Dr. Anthony Galea of Toronto was sentenced to time served Friday in U.S. District Court in Buffalo.

The healing specialist, who has helped Tiger Woods and other big-name athletes come back from injuries, pleaded guilty to the federal charge in July.

Speaking in a courtroom full of supporters, Galea apologized to the U.S. government, his wife and his assistant for the trouble he caused them. The judge said any good that could come of sentencing him to prison would be outweighed by the good he can do his patients.

Galea wasn't licensed to practice in the United States when he made trips across the border to treat athletes, including professional football and baseball players in several U.S. cities.

Galea was widely known for a blood-spinning injury treatment, but prosecutors said some patients received human growth hormone, which is banned by major sports.

During his plea hearing in July, prosecutors said Galea's patients included NFL linebacker Takeo Spikes and retired running back Jamal Lewis, who were not accused of any use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The New York Mets' Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran also acknowledged talking to federal authorities during the investigation, but said they did not receive HGH. Woods acknowledged being treated by Galea but also said he hadn't received performance enhancers.

Athletes often sought out Galea for platelet-rich plasma therapy, a treatment used to speed healing that involves extracting blood from patients and re-injecting just the plasma.

Galea became the focus of Canadian and U.S. authorities' attention in September 2009 when his assistant, Mary Anne Catalano, was stopped at the border in Buffalo with a small quantity of human growth hormone, Actovegin, and vials of foreign homeopathic drugs.

It wasn't immediately known how much time Galea has already spent in custody. A year of supervised release included in the sentence won't be enforced because he lives in Canada.

Identity, not policy, driving the new Egypt

Amr Nabil / AP

Egyptian representatives of candidates and army soldiers guard ballot boxes on a vehicle as anti-riot policemen line up in front of supporters outside a counting center in Giza, Egypt on Thursday.

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News correspondent

DOKKI, EGYPT ? Mona Al Shabrawy came into her daughter?s room and eagerly woke her up Wednesday morning. The gynecologist was getting ready to go vote in the second round of Egypt?s parliamentary elections, but there was one problem: She didn?t know who to vote for; her instinct was to turn to her daughter, Aisha, for advice.

Aisha Al Shabrawy had been closely following the evolving political landscape in post-revolution Egypt. Party pamphlets and candidate manifestos litter the family home. Aisha took to the streets during Egypt?s revolution in February of year, and since then, she been to many other protests in Tahrir Square.

She has her finger on the pulse on the debate raging across Egypt over the role of religion in politics, which grew more intense after the first round of elections that saw Islamist parties decimate their liberal counterparts and win close to 60 percent of the seats. Aisha didn?t hold back when suggesting to her mother how she should make her choice.

?I told her to vote for the Kotla,? Aisha said. ?Kotla? is the Arabic word for ?Bloc? ? it is short form among Egyptians these days referring to the liberal leaning bloc of political parties running together.

A few hours later, Aisha cast her own ballot at a polling station in Agouza, a town just outside Cairo, for the first time in her life. The second round of parliamentary elections were held Wednesday and Thursday in nine out of Egypt?s 27 provinces.? She voted for the liberals at a women-only polling station.

It was the culmination of a personal journey for this 31-year-old aspiring jewelry designer that highlights how identity is shaping Egypt?s new political landscape more so than policy. And at a time when results from Egypt?s first round of elections suggest the country as a whole is shifting toward conservative Islamist parties, Aisha is moving in the opposite direction.

Story of an ex-Islamist
At the age of 18, Aisha noticed she was increasingly at odds with what she considered to be the materialistic and superficial society around her. Aisha began to find comfort and solace among her more religious friends and ultimately was drawn to the appeal of Islamic preachers like Amr Khaled, who like many other Muslim preachers has amassed a huge online and public following.

Egyptian women read a candidates list at a polling center in Giza, Egypt on Thursday.

She began attending religious lessons and meetings that were geared toward the young. ?They knew about the young generation, they were very practical and pragmatic in appealing to the youth,? she said.

By the age of 21, Aisha had embraced the ultra-conservative teachings of the Salafi movement. Many Salafis say their ?interpretation of Islam is the correct interpretation.? They believe in ?the righteous ancestors? of Islam, or as known in Arabic, the ?Salaf el Salah.?

For the next two years, she was a self-described Salafist, a pious individual who loved wearing the Niqab ? or full-face veil. She appreciated the sense of community enjoyed by Salafists and their straightforwardness about their beliefs and viewpoints.

But Aisha also began to see rigidity in how Salafis practiced their religion. She felt the Salafis were putting too much of an emphasis on the external image and behavior that should be projected by its followers, rather than on the spiritual journey inside. They would use guilt and fear to persuade or dissuade their followers from certain actions. It was all beginning to take its toll on how Aisha viewed herself.

Nearly five years after beginning to embrace Salafist ideology and practices, she began to withdraw from the movement and its associations, opting instead to focus on her own spiritual journey. In 2003, she stopped wearing the niqab and today considers herself liberal.

Explosion of political parties
With the fall of the Mubarak regime and the explosion of political parties, Aisha is figuring out where she fits into the political scene. Many Egyptians expected the emergence of Islamist parties after Mubarak?s ouster. In this conservative society that is often considered the birthplace of political Islamist movements in other parts of the world, Egyptians had grown accustomed to the presence of socio-religious political organizations.

One movement for close to 80 years has dominated political Islam in Egypt: the Muslim Brotherhood. And after the first round of parliamentary voting two weeks ago, its political wing, known as the Freedom and Justice Party, ascended to the top of the political ladder.

But the election result that surprised many Egyptians was the strong performance of the even-more-conservative parties known as Salafists. These parties managed to garner close to a quarter of the seats in the first round, which took place in the country?s more urban areas, like Cairo.

Now, as the voting moves into more rural areas with lower incomes, Salafist (and other Islamist) parties are expected to do just as well, if not better. In poor areas across Egypt, the state for years has failed to provide adequate social services like hospitals, clinics, schools and jobs. These shortcomings were often filled by socio-religious organizations through charitable work.

These very same charitable organizations are now part of larger political movements and are reaping the political benefits of years of service to the previously neglected masses.

Identity politics
At a polling station in Giza, one woman gave her take on Egypt?s elections. ?We are not voting based on policies and solutions to our problems. I don?t think any of these candidates actually have solutions to our daily problems. I don?t know who any of them are, to be honest, but I know what they represent.?

In that sense, many believe Egypt?s elections are as much about identity as they are about politics.

?This vote should not be called elections, these elections should be called a census,? said Mohsen, a 42-year-old computer engineer, walking out of a polling station after voting in Dokki,? a town in Giza governorate just outside of Cairo. ?Based on the results we will know the religious and political orientation of our society, not the policies we need,? he added.

The notion that many Egyptians are voting based on their identity in elections, which so far have been considered mostly free and fair, after decades of rigged elections and politics dominated by single party rule, may not be a surprise to many Egyptians. But some voters are concerned about what effect identity politics could have on future policies.

Omar Hikal, a businessman also voting in Dokki, was a first-timer at the polls. ?I don?t believe religion should be the basis for political decisions.?

And that?s what has many liberals concerned about the first round of voting. ?Egypt is not an Islamic country, it should be a Muslim country,? Hikal said. Liberals like Hikal don?t want Egypt?s largely Muslim identity to become the basis for an Islamic state.

The country?s military rulers have already suggested that the body drafting the constitution has to reflect Egyptian diversity, something that angered Islamist parties and raised worries about a looming political confrontation between an Islamist-dominated parliament and the generals.

While the Freedom and Justice Party has tried to allay fears by assuring the public that social restrictions do not top the party?s legislative agenda, not everyone is convinced.

Aisha, the one-time Salafist turned liberal, said, ?the Muslim Brotherhood may not be lying, but they don?t always say the whole truth.?

To some, like Aisha and Hikal, both liberal voters, at least the Salafists are ?straight shooters.?
?If they want women to stay at home and wear veils, they will tell everyone that?s what we want to do,? said Hikal.
Others don?t see it that way.

?We had the liberals like Mubarak and his children for 30 years and look what he did to the country,? said Mohammed, a 47-year-old barber who voted for the Salafist Nour Party.

Associating liberals with the era of Mubarak?s rule is a common sentiment among many conservatives who believe the pro-American and pro-Israeli leader was emblematic of liberal ideology of trying to keep religion and religious parties marginalized from politics by force.

Extremist or an inspiration?
For Aisha, the sudden emergence of Salafist parties is not a surprise. But their transformation into a political movement is new and will be tested in an expanding political environment.?

Today, Aisha believes Salafis and other parties have a place in the new Egypt, so long as they don?t force their ideology onto others, something she warns Salafists do subtly well.

Since leaving behind Salafist ideology, Aisha has been contemplating turning her personal diary into a book.

A few weeks before the elections, she posted on her Facebook page what she thought would be a fitting title for her story, ?Diaries of an Ex-extremist.? A few hours later, one of her Salafi friends replied? ?You were never an extremist, you were an inspiration.?

Graphic shows change in weekly jobless claims

(AP) ? The job market is healthier than at any time since the end of the Great Recession.

The number of people filing for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest since May 2008, a sign that the waves of corporate layoffs that have defined the past few years are all but over.

"This is unexpectedly great news," said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics.

It will take an additional step ? robust hiring, not just the end of layoffs ? to bring the 8.6 percent unemployment rate down significantly. Experts say that won't happen until businesses are more confident about customer demand. And the European debt crisis could still cause damage here.

But the report on unemployment claims Thursday was the latest to suggest that the economy, two and a half slow years after the official end of the recession, may finally be picking up momentum.

The nation added 100,000 or more jobs every month from July through November, the first five-month streak since 2006. And the economy, which was barely growing when the year started, has picked up speed each quarter.

More small businesses plan to hire than at any time in three years, a trade group said this week. And another private-sector survey found more companies are planning to add workers than at any time since 2008.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits came in at 366,000, down from 385,000 the week before. That moves the figure closer to its pre-recession range of roughly 280,000 to 350,000.

The last time claims were so low, the nation was six months into the recession but didn't know it yet. The unemployment rate was 5.4 percent ? a level almost hard to imagine these days. Unemployment has been above 8 percent for almost three years.

That spring of 2008, Bear Stearns, an investment house that predated the Depression, had been hobbled by its investment in subprime mortgages and was sold near collapse to JPMorgan Chase for a paltry $10 a share.

The worst was yet to come. Lehman Brothers collapsed that September. Credit froze, investors panicked and the stock market plunged. Businesses began slashing millions of jobs. Unemployment claims peaked at 659,000 in March 2009.

Unemployment claims are a measure of the pace of layoffs, and they have declined steadily for three months.

But that's just part of the picture. Business aren't hiring with gusto. Unemployment fell 0.4 percentage points last month, but about half the decline was because people gave up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

"One of the features of this recovery is that hiring is exceptionally weak," said Jeremy Lawson, senior U.S. economist at BNP Paribas.

And weaker-than-usual hiring doesn't necessarily show up in unemployment claims. Many employers cut staffs to the bone during the recession. If they worry that business will grow weakly next year, they may hold off on layoffs ? but not hire, either.

"The hiring numbers will continue to look good but not great," said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight.

Besides waiting for demand to come back, companies have other things to worry about. A recession in Europe would hurt U.S. exports, and a collapse in European banks because of the debt crisis there would probably cause a worldwide panic.

Another concern: The economy has been here before.

In February, unemployment claims fell to 375,000. Companies added about 200,000 jobs a month for three months. But then oil prices spiked and Europe's debt problem got worse. Employers added just 53,000 jobs in May.

The decline in unemployment claims comes as Congress wrangles over whether to extend long-term unemployment benefits, which are set to expire at the end of this year.

Lawmakers differ over how long benefits should last. The House passed a Republican bill Tuesday that would renew emergency aid but reduce the maximum duration to 79 weeks from 99.

Democrats want to keep the full 99 weeks. The measure is part of broader legislation in the Democratic-led Senate that would also extend a cut in the Social Security tax and put $1,000 to $2,000 in most Americans' pockets next year.

In other economic news Thursday:

? The prices companies pay for factory and farm goods rose 0.3 percent last month. The figure was pushed up by higher food and pharmaceutical prices. But energy prices barely rose, keeping inflation in check. In the year ending in November, wholesale prices increased 5.7 percent, the Labor Department said. It's the smallest increase since March.

? A mixed picture emerged for manufacturing. Factory output fell in November for the first time in seven months, according to the Federal Reserve. Manufacturers made fewer cars, electronics and appliances. But some economists noted that auto sales rose in November, suggesting that production will rebound. And the Federal Reserve Banks of Philadelphia and New York said manufacturing expanded in their regions. Manufacturing has been a key source of economic growth this year.

Gingrich defends government-sponsored enterprises (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich describes some government-sponsored enterprises as valuable entities that can help people.

Gingrich on Thursday night defended his time working with Freddie Mac, the quasi-government home mortgage agency. Gingrich made more than $1.6 million working with it.

Gingrich says at the latest GOP debate that some public-private partnerships ? institutions like credit unions and electricity cooperatives ? are important and do a good job.

His Republican rivals criticized him. Texas Rep. Ron Paul says those are the "worst kind" of economic entity because they mix free enterprise with the government.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann says Freddie Mac and a similar entity, Fannie Mae, "need to go away."
