Books for tweens and teens | Simple Kids

books for tweens and teens

Written by Kara Fleck, Simple Kids editor and Rockin? Granola mama.

Earlier in the Summer my daughter Jillian and I asked you for your recommendations for books for tweens and teens.? Boy, did you come through for us!

Thanks to you, we have discovered a few new series that we are both hooked on (I like to read what she?s reading) and we rediscovered a few old favorites.? Thank you!

I know that many of you who have children in your lives around the same age frequently are on the hunt for good reading material for them as well, so today I?m rounding up some of your suggestions, plus a few that the tween reader in my house loves, to share with you today.

Books for tweens and teens

Here are a few of our favorites so far this Summer ?

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (series) ? many of you mentioned this series to us so Jillian and I were curious.? We began with book one, The Mysterious Howling and have moved on to book two and are eagerly waiting the third book to come out in paperback so we can continue the adventures of Miss Penelope Lumley and the ?three wild creatures? in her care.? Written by Maryrose Wood, we?ve found these books to be funny, thoughtful, and intriguing. Plus, as the older sister to three ?wild creatures? Jillian finds herself relating to the governess in more ways than one.

The Mysterious Benedict Society (series) ? by Trenton Lee Stewart.? Clever, with engaging characters, and a delightful mix of brain-busters, mystery, and drama this series has been neat to read in part because it has allowed for so many discussions between my child and I about social issues.? Plus, it is fun to see if we can work out the clues and brain-busters before the members of the society do.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians ?(series) ? written by Rick Riordan, this is a series that Jillian has read more than once (a compliment I?ve only ever known her to play to the Harry Potter series before now).? The series is about a boy who learns that he is a demi-god, and not only that, but there are other demi-god children as well.? A fun fictional series based on the Greek mythology.? Skip the movie and read the books instead.

Some more recommendations, including many from Simple Kids readers:

  • The 39 Clues (series) ? she just started the first book, The Maze of Bones, but so far Jillian is enjoying it and my husband has been eager for her to finish it so that he can read it next.? I?ve got my place as third in line, but from what Jillian reports it will be worth the wait. My series loving child is excited because there are many books in this series, so she?s got a lot of reading ahead of her to be excited about.
  • The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster? ? this classic recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and is one that we read as part of homeschool last year that we both really enjoyed.
  • Red Sails to Capri by Ann Weil ? short, engaging, and dialogue driven, one of our favorites so far this Summer from our homeschool reading list.? This book was the catalyst for some creative writing projects at our house and we find ourselves referring to the characters and wondering what they might think of certain situations in daily life from time to time.? A quick read with a lot of action and mystery packed into its pages.
  • Holes by Louis Sachar ? a Newberry award winner that was highly recommend by Grandma (so we know it must be good).
  • Little Women, Little Men, Jo?s Boys by Louisa Mae Alcott ? I cannot wait to share these with Jillian, I know she?ll love them!? I think Little Women will be good to begin reading once the cooler days of Winter arrive.? It is good fireside and cocoa reading, don?t you agree?
  • Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson ? written as a prequel to JM Barry?s Peter Pan, Jillian and I are both hoping to get our hands on this one soon after a Simple Kids reader suggested it.? It sounds like one we?ll both love.
  • The Hobbit ? we?ve made a deal with Jillian that she can see the movie if she reads this Tolkien classic first.

?

  • ?The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis ? a reader was surprised we hadn?t read these yet and, frankly, so am I.? I plan to add these to Jillian?s book shelf very soon and hope she will love them as much as I did when I read them for the first time as a young adult.
  • Til We Have Faces ? my favorite CS Lewis book, and one I?m planning on saving for just the right time.? This is one of those books that I think everyone should read and its story of love and faith is beautifully written.? A novel that stayed with me long after I read it for the first time and I?m looking forward to seeing if Jillian feels the same way some day.
  • The Search for Wondla and A Hero For Wondla by Tony DiTerlizzi sound like just the series for my sci-fi loving daughter after a reader described it as, ? young girl raised by robot underground Earth chased above ground to discover she?s not on Earth (just the beginning of book).?

And that, my friends, should keep our library card busy for a little while.? Thank you for all of your suggestions. Jillian and I both really appreciate them. Happy reading!

Looking for more suggestions? Check out the comments in this post for a long, long list of ideas for kids ages 8 and up.

Ideal benchmarks/prerequisites for relationship stages - Straight ...

What would you say either in general, or for you specifically, are the ideal benchmarks/preresequites for relationship stages? In other words, what would you say are the major transitional stages in a relationship of two people from stranger to life partner / coparents, and what do you think the prerequisites are for advancing to the next stage?

I'll give my own example, but I'm not sure it's necessarily correct or ideal, which is why I'm looking to you all, especially those with a lot of relationship experience, for your input.

I don't mind those whose relationships are a little unconventional from chiming in about their polyamorous situation or whatever, because that's very interesting and is even helpful in giving perspective, but I am hoping to get the majority of input from people who also feel like a sexually monogamous life partnership is their ideal ultimate outcome for them personally. I either case, I'm looking more for what you feel would be the ideal pathway, rather than whatever pathway you happened to actually take, though feel free to include anecdotes in service of supporting either by good or bad example why you feel a certain way.

Here's my first draft!

Stranger >Acquaintance

Merely requires meeting someone and either communicating with them or participating in the same activity, more than once.

Acquaintance > Friend

Communicate with and participate in activities with on a regular basis.

Friend > Best friends

Be honest and open about values, past, etc.

Best Friends > Casual Dating

Have mutual physical attraction, decide to start dating casually, decide methods and level of physical intimacy

Casual Dating > Boyfriend / Girlfriend (Committed Relationship)

Decide to be mutually exclusive, take STD tests before having sex, discuss the nature of sexual intimacy, confirm that you share similar goals with regard to the future of the relationship in terms of marriage, kids, career, etc.

Committed Monogamy > Live Together

Discuss financial aspects, time together and apart, etc.

Live Together > Engagement

Decide on a mutual desire for a more permanent committed relationship, reconfirm relationship and future goals, reconfirm shared values, resolve any lingering conflicts, discuss and decide on financial responsibilities, decide what to bring to and expect from the marriage, meet families, discuss method of future conflict resolution.

Engagement > Marriage

Reconfirm everything above.

Marriage > Renewal

Reaffirm commitment, resolve any unexpected new conflicts

Renewal > Parenting

Discuss parenting methods, values, beliefs, and responsibilities with regard to having children.

I've been a little vague in parts, definitely would love to hear what other people think needs to be negotiated and decided during the various stages.

Back to school, back to fitness | Pasco News

29 Jul, 2012

No matter how long it?s been since you set foot in a classroom, September can still bring a sense of starting over, which makes it the perfect time of year to take stock of where you are and where you want to be with your general health and level of fitness. You can go ?back to school? by enrolling in an exercise class or get a new ?teacher? by hiring a personal trainer.

?There is a sense of new beginnings on all fronts when school starts,? says Jenna Murphy, a 42-year-old mom from Maple Grove, Minn. ?This fall I want to improve my flexibility through yoga. I also plan on trying ballet bar fitness as well as kettle bells.?

While January is the traditional time when many people consider starting healthy habits, they don?t always see those changes through to the end of the year. ?The new year creates more emotion and motivation to start change,? explains Jason Stella, a master personal trainer at Life Time Fitness, The Healthy Way of Life Company. ?The problem with this motivation is that once the media hype and emotional high is gone, so is the belief in achieving the goal.?

Even if you have a good start in January and keep your resolve through the summer, come fall ? with its endless procession of holidays ? even the most dedicated can stop making fitness a priority.

Instead of thinking, ?I?ll start over in January,? use these three Rs to make September a time to renew your fitness goals.

Reassess: Consider what you have accomplished so far and what new action you need to take to stay on course with your goals. In addition, evaluate your schedule. How can you fit fitness in with activities and obligations that start in the fall while staying motivated with fewer daylight hours? Fitness centers often create new schedules this time of year. Learn something new by way of a new exercise class or sport, or find a nutrition or health education seminar to attend.

Reconnect: Find ways to re-establish that emotional high toward your goals and keep the momentum going. One way to do this is to sign up for an event that will complement your health and fitness goals, or help you achieve them. ?An event can be a 10K, a triathlon, half-marathon or more extreme events like the Warrior Dash, Spartan Race or Alpha Showdown,? Stella says. ?This keeps motivation high throughout the year and helps people stay on track with the kind of lifestyle behaviors that lead to achieving their desired goals.? Accomplishing these events also leads to more confidence, he adds, which perpetuates the goal-setting, goal-achieving cycle.

Reassert: Change your mindset from making a resolution to making a commitment. ?A personal commitment is much more powerful than a resolution, which is often thrust upon us by outside expectations,? Stella says. A resolution is deciding to do or not do something; a commitment is a promise or obligation. ?Think about the personal responsibility between the two. When people ?promise? or make an ?obligation? it puts their credibility on the line, and maintaining one?s credibility has a huge impact on motivation.?

Murphy, who is a member of the Life Time Fitness in Maple Grove, Minn., says she is no longer in school, but having a personal trainer provides a great education. ?Four years ago, having never done anything athletic my whole life, the best decision I have ever made was to work with a personal trainer from the start. She is always introducing me to new workouts and showing me I can do things I never thought I could. That?s very empowering and affirming to me.?

Why New Super Mario Bros 2 Is All About Coins - Video Games ...

As the New Super Mario Bros. 2 commercial showed, the game ? at one point titled New Super Mario Bros. Gold ? is all about collecting gold coins. Mario HIMSELF even turns into Gold Mario (shown above) for a limited time whenever he picks up a Fire Flower offshoot called the Gold Flower that allows him to shoot golden fireballs that turn every block they touch into more gold coins! Midas touch, what?s that? Gold Mario?s where it?s at!

Although it might seem odd for a Mario game to be all about collecting coins, Nintendo are promising something secret will happen when you collect 1 million coins in-game. Hence, that?s the game?s main goal, your running total number of collected coins is tracked for all modes together. Oh and don?t worry, Princess Peach gets kidnapped by the Koopa Kids again, so technically the story here is that Mario & Luigi have to save her AGAIN.

So how did it came about that New Super Mario Bros. 2 is all about the coins? The newest Iwata Asks interview sees Nintendo president Iwata ask the game?s creators to explain why it?s all about the gold coin! It turns out, making the theme gold and collecting the coins ?felt right? and the more they focused the gameplay around it, the more fun level ideas they came up with, so they stuck with it. Read on for more details?

Iwata: Now I?d like to ask about how the theme of this game?one million coins?came about.

Amano: All right. It started early on in development when we were determining the structure little by little in order to make the stages fun, and for some reason Nakago-san and Tezuka-san kept talking about coins.

Iwata: They were muttering about coins? (laughs)

Amano: Yeah, like, ?Shouldn?t this one be About Coins?? (laughs)

Iwata: (laughs)

Amano: They were both going on about how good it felt to get coins. It was just about the time that Super Mario 3D Land was finishing up, and in that game Mario can put a Question Block over his head.

Iwata: And if he runs around like that, coins come popping out.

Amano: I got a request to adopt that in New Super Mario Bros. 2. I was like, ?So, uh?coins come out of his head??

Iwata: It didn?t quite make sense to you at the time.

Amano: No. I mean, only a few coins came out at first, and I thought, ?That isn?t very satisfying,? so we made it so that if you dash, coins come out like crazy. I had Tezuka-san try it out and he was thrilled, saying, ?This is great!? and ?You can make all kinds of stages like this!? (laughs)

Everyone: (laughs)

Amano: For the most part, only players with confidence in their skill can experience how good it feels to run through Super Mario in a dash, but I thought that if a bunch of coins come out when you do, it feels great, so more people will feel like tearing on through.

Iwata: It would feel great to get coins just by dashing.

Amano: But that was something adopted from Super Mario 3D Land, and I didn?t like just copying it, so I made a golden Koopa Troopa. If you stomp on and toss one, coins scatter around.

Iwata: Right.

Amano: Around that time, when Tezuka-san and Nakago-san had one of their usual lunches?

Iwata: Oh, the customary lunches.11 (laughs) 11. Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka and others have lunch meetings to exchange information, and once a week, Satoru Iwata also participates. For more details, see the special edition of ?Iwata Asks? for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword called ?Creative Small Talk.?

Amano: Yeah. He came back from one of those lunches absolutely brimming with joy and said, ?How about one million coins?!? (laughs)

Everyone: (laughs)

Iwata: So all that muttering about coins suddenly increased to one million? (laughs)

Amano: Yes!

Tezuka: (opening the door) Sorry I?m late.

Iwata: Oh, just in time, the ?How about one million coins?? person walks in!

Everyone: (laughs)

Tezuka: Huh? Say what?

Iwata: We were just talking about how you said, ?How about one million coins??

Tezuka: Oh, I see.

Iwata: Why did you decide on a million coins after coming back from lunch?

Tezuka: Um?

Iwata: You don?t remember?!

Tezuka: Not really, no.

Iwata: (laughs)

Tezuka: I thought if players were going to collect them, then an astounding number would be better.

Amano: Yeah.

Tezuka: I didn?t think that sticking to 100,000 or 10,000 was the way to go.

Iwata: Amano-san, what did you think when you heard one million? I bet you thought, ?That?s ridiculous!?

Amano: I thought it was a good number to shoot for. I, too, thought, ?It?ll work out somehow.?

Iwata: Realy! (laughs)

Amano: Tezuka-san and Nakago-san came over to development and were putting lots of coins around the stages, so I thought, ?Maybe we really can reach a million.? And then at some point, we set one million coins as our goal.

Iwata: But if you do that, then you have to make all kinds of things related to coins.

Ishikawa: Yes, that?s right.

Amano: We mentioned Koopa Troopas earlier, and at first, the only thing to become golden was the Koopa Troopas. Koopa Troopa hops through a Gold Ring and turns gold for a limited time, and I was satisfied with that. But then the designers said, ?Why don?t the other enemies become gold, too?? (laughs)

Ishikawa: If we were going to do one, then?

Iwata: Like, ?Make gold Goombas, too!?

Ishikawa: Yeah. And, ?Make Lakitu gold!? (laughs)

Amano: And we made Bullet Bill gold.

Iwata: So this time, all sorts of stuff turn into gold.

Ishikawa: And then the screen?

Iwata: It gets filled with gold.

Everyone: (laughs)

Ishikawa: The designers were worried that it would begin to look gaudy.

Iwata: They were worried that with too much gold, it might look tacky.

Ishikawa: Yeah. But the final visuals actually gave a luxurious impression and were simply pleasing. I thought, ?This is great!?

Iwata: Ishikawa-san, I bet in all your time as a designer, you?ve never drawn so many coins or used so much gold!

Ishikawa: You can say that again! (laughs)

Amano: And one more, there?s Gold Mario.

Iwata: The new power-up where Mario turns into gold all over.

Amano: One of the programmers suggested this idea, in past Mario games there was the P-Switch and by stepping on it the blocks would turn into coins. I was suggested that by using this mechanic we may be able to make a Mario power-up that would make it easy to collect coins. And when we made it, it felt great. From there we talked about making a new power-up.

Iwata: I see.

Amano: What felt really new this time was that the programmers had a lot of ideas that helped steer the direction of the game.

Iwata: That?s probably because there was the primary objective of collecting coins. Everyone focused on it and a lot of ideas came out.

Amano: Yes, I think that?s exactly what happened.

Here?s the latest New Super Mario Bros. 2 trailer:

One thing?s for sure, though? considering every 100 coins you collect you still get an extra life ? like in every other Mario game ? that means there won?t be a shortage of 1UP?s. I imagine in the tougher levels later in the game we?ll need ?em!

What You Need To Know About Consolidating Student Loans ...

Chances are if you?ve taken out student loans in order to finance your education you have been, or at least will be, receiving calls and offers in the mail to consolidate your student loans. There are actually numerous advantages to consolidating your student loans. In addition to gaining a fixed interest rate you can also potentially lower your monthly payments. In the event that you begin to experience financial difficulties, you may also be able to take advantage of flexible payment options with a consolidated student loan.

Unlike other types of debt consolidation programs a student loan consolidation gives you the opportunity to combine your loans into one package with more attractive terms. You also don?t have to worry about being turned down because of a bad credit score and the interest on the loan may be tax deductible. In addition, in the event of your death your survivors won?t have to worry about paying it back because the debt will be discharged.

If you have a variable interest rate student loan, consolidating the loan can also help you to lock in a lower rate before the rates increase the next year. Over the length of the loan, this one step can actually help to save you a tremendous amount of money.

Of course, in addition to the advantages there are also some disadvantages of which you should be aware. One of the most important is that if you end up lowering your monthly payment you are actually extending the length of the loan and that means you?ll pay more over the life of the loan due to increased interest. You can still take advantage of the other benefits of a student loan consolidation without this disadvantage; however. Just don?t lower your payments unless it is really necessary.

When considering lenders for a student loan consolidation it is important that you always compare the terms of each offer made to you. Consider the interest rate and length of the repayment terms to be sure you are getting the best deal possible.

If you have a mix of both federal and private student loans, you should also be aware that while both types of loans are available to be consolidated it may not be a good idea to consolidate your federal loans and private loans together in the same package. There are stipulations on private loans that are not required on federal student loans, such as no deferments, no tax deductions on the interest, no forgiveness of the debt in the event of death and no forgiveness of the loan for working in certain fields. In the event of a mix of private and federal, it?s usually best to go ahead and consolidate the private loans separately from the federal loans so that you can retain those advantages for the federal loans.

By understanding all of the factors related to student loan consolidation you will be in a better position to make a more informed decision regarding your finances.

Factors Other Than Money in a Negotiation - Business Negotiation ...

There are a lot of factors other than money that may come up in a negotiation.? A recent trip brought up an unexpected opportunity in negotiation.? Recently my wife and I had attended a self-publishing workshop in North Carolina.? We had booked the room for four nights and arrived on a Thursday evening.? Later that night, we attended a happy hour hosted by the hotel manager and had a pleasant evening. Friday evening we came back to our room and could not get the key to work.? They had cancelled the room.? I went to the front desk and got the keys ?recharged? and the desk clerk asked how many more nights we would be staying.? I told her one more night.? Saturday we were told that class would end early by 3:00 P.M.? We decided Sunday morning that we would check out and leave early.? Sue went to checkout of our room while I filled the ice chest.? When I came back she was fuming.? The manager had tried to charge her for the night we were not using.? Here is how the negotiation unfolded and some commentary on the negotiation tactics used.

Customer:?? Hi, we are checking out of Room 202.

Manager:? I see that you were booked for 4 nights and you are checking out early, I will have to charge you for the fourth night. [You are changing the deal]

Customer:? What!? That?s ridiculous, people check out all of the time.? [This is a common occurrence and is accepted in the industry.]

Manager:? Well, you booked for four nights; here is your original reservation.? [We have a contract]

Customer:? Well, I?m sorry but we found out that our class is ending early.? Several of us have checked out already.? [You have allowed this to occur already ?exception to the policy]

Manager:? Hmm.? Well I will have to evaluate it at the end of the day to see what the charges are.? [Postpone decision until the person is not there to refute it.]

Customer: Why do you have to wait, you are the manager and can approve it now.? [You have the authority and there is no one higher up who has to approve it]? Besides, I brought you another customer who stayed two nights at the higher weekend rate.? I am an Honors member and stay at this chain all of the time.? I would not expect to have to pay for nights I don?t use.? [Ongoing relationship with company, do you really want to alienate a good customer who will be back to this specific place.]

Manager:? Okay, we do want to provide good service to our members.? [They have referred me business and can bring future business, why jeopardize the relationship.]

Two important factors were at play here ? maintaining the relationship and citing standards that the company espouses.? We will talk more about standards next week.? While one of the issues was money (the night?s lodging), the real decision point was keeping the relationship and roviding a great stay at the hotel (customer service).? When negotiating, remember there are other factors at play besides money.? You need to figure that out what those factors are and use them to make yours a winning negotiation.

Saving Cash On Moving - Real Estate Abilene

There comes an occasion in every person?s existence when they have to get out of their current house and into a brand new one. There are also many factors that need to be thought about before the transfer happens. One of the most important options to make is location. Why is it that you need to move? Are you currently moving because you can?t afford your current rent or home loan? Or are you currently moving to be closer to a brand new school or job. Furthermore, factoring in what the move will set you back can also be very crucial.

Relocating certainly isn?t cheap. It?s essential to take the amount of time you have and how much you can afford to invest under consideration before contacting that relocation business or throwing all of your items into the back of your truck. If you?re moving because you can?t afford your current living situation, you most likely can?t afford to hire a relocation business. A relocation business comes into your house, packs your things, loads them on a truck, then delivers your things to your new house. If you can?t afford the price they will charge you, it might be better to move your stuff on your own. Before you write off movers as a great method to save money while moving, although, make certain you get relocation quotes and compare the costs with you moving by yourself.

To save cash on moving, rent a moving truck and load all of your things yourself. You?ll only have to pay to rent the truck, and pay for the gasoline. With regards to buying boxes and moving supplies, these things can also price a little bit of cash. If you are looking to save cash on moving, you might attempt hitting the local grocery shops to determine if they have any boxes they?re throwing away. Just call up the store and find out what days they have boxes accessible. Be sure to get moving insurance as well so that you don?t end up paying more to cover damages as well. In the end, when you are ready to move, it is important that you have made all of the preparations for the big day. Whether or not you?re doing it yourself isn?t an problem. Getting the job done the right way will save you time and save you cash. Don?t wait till the last minute. It will save you cash along with a headache on moving day if you are well prepared. If you adhere to these suggestions, your move is certain to be effective.

Do Attached Parents Get More Sex? - Analytical Armadillo

The focus around "attached or attachment parenting" (AP) has been sex orientated recently. Firstly The Guardian published?this "piece" (and really, that's code for drivel), closely followed by this offering from Jill Filipovic for Feministe (a feminist blog).

Whilst I'm sure we could dwell a while discussing possible motivation of the Guardian for their selection of writers (a bloke who quite rightly was summed up by Jill as "sounds like a total dick", and a 20 something feminist lawyer) - especially given they have writers on their team such as Annalisa Barbieri, who write with experience and substance on such topics, let's move along.

Jill deftly attacks James' clearly sexist attitude, whilst still getting a dig at attached parenting - just not for the reasons James gives.
"It would have been nice to see a decent take on the impact that?attachment parenting can have on a marriage when it becomes a barrier to intimacy, or an article about how attachment parenting very much feeds into traditional ideals about women existing to serve and sacrifice for their children, or a piece on how sharing a bed with a kid until the kid is in third grade really puts the kabosh on sexytimes."
and
"Breastfeeding for five years can be a real issue; denying that isn't particularly helpful".
and
"There are certainly lots of good criticisms to be made about attachment parenting"?
And Jill has AP'd how many children exactly?

So let's actually start with what AP is and isn't about. ?Whilst I'm sure it's super handy for some to believe there are neat little rows of ?parenting labels "attached parenting", "detached parenting" and so on. ?This simply isn't the case - not all parents who considered themselves attached bed share or breastfeed, so it hardly seems fair the AP banner seems to be a "catch all" ie a stereotype. ? Instead AP is simply a basic foundation of ethics which can and is interpreted differently by each and every family. ?Jill herself acknowledges this to some degree, before saying:

"But the whole philosophy was spelled out by a rightwing misogynist who saw women's "natural" roles as mothers and servers of children; his view, basically, was that women should sacrifice everything for their kids and centre their entire worlds around those kids, because that's what good women do. In my view, that's not particularly good for women or for kids (have you met adults who grew up believing they were the centre of the entire universe? They are not pleasant or well-adjusted people)."
But this isn't strictly true....?
Attachment theory is the joint work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth?(Ainsworth &?Bowlby, 1991 ). Drawing on concepts from ethology, cybernetics, information processing,?developmental psychology, and psychoanalysts, John Bowlby formulated the basic tenets of?the theory.?

He thereby revolutionized our thinking about a child?s tie to the mother and its?disruption through separation, deprivation, and bereavement. Mary Ainsworth?s innovative?methodology not only made it possible to test some of Bowlby?s ideas empirically hut also?helped expand the theory itself and is responsible for some of the new directions it is now?taking. Ainsworth contributed the concept of the attachment figure as a secure base from?which an infant can explore the world. In addition, she formulated the concept of maternal?sensitivity to infant signals and its role in the development of infant-mother attachment?patterns."

About Bowlby personally:

"After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1928, where he received rigorous?scientific training and some instruction in what is now called developmental psychology, Bowlby?performed volunteer work at a school for maladjusted children while reconsidering his career?goals. His experiences with two children at the school set his professional life on course. One ?as?a very isolated, remote, affectionless teenager who had been expelled from his previous school for?theft and had had no stable mother figure. The second child was an anxious boy of 7 or 8 who?trailed Bowlby around and who was known as his shadow (Ainsworth, 1974). Persuaded by this?experience of the effects of early family relationships on personality development, Bowlby?decided to embark on a career as a child psychiatrist (Senn, 1977h)?Concurrently with his studies in medicine and psychiatry, Bowlby undertook training at the?British Psychoanalytic Institute."
What's also interesting is that Mary Ainsworth was in her time considered somewhat of a feminist - she? ?enrolled at the University of Toronto in 1929 and was only one of four to complete an honors degree in psychology. After completing a PHD and serving in the American corps, Mary returned to the University of Toronto as assistant professor and taught introductory psychology, experimental psychology, and personality assessment. After meeting her husband Mary moved to London and secured a research position at the Tavistock Clinic under John Bowlby. After a stint and a study in Uganda, they moved to Maryland and Johns Hopkins offered Ainsworth work as a lecturer. But it wasn't plain sailing:
"Ainswirth did face salary discrimination during her first years at Johns Hopkins, receiving less money than her male colleagues. She was responsible for integrating the John Hopkins Club, where the male faculty lunched in the main dining room, while the females ate in a smaller, separate one. One day, she dressed in her best, pinned on a corsage, and took a table in the middle of the male-only room and waited until she was eventually served." here
Of the relationship of her research to the women's movement, Mary Ainsworth acknowledged that her work might be interpreted as a dictate to mothers to stay home with their children during the early years. And while she emphasized the importance of?a secure attachment between infant and caregiver, and that full-time mothering may be the usual way of ensuring a secure attachment, she did not deny that alternative arrangements were possible. She said, "Had I myself had the children for whom I vainly longed, I like to believe I could have arrived at some satisfactory combination of mothering and a career, but I do not believe that there is any universal, easy, ready-made solution to the problem" (Ainsworth, 1983, p. 216).
So this wasn't merely one unqualified woman hater tossing around a few random ideas. ?Anyone interested in AP may enjoy ?THE ORIGINS OF ATTACHMENT THEORY: ?JOHN BOWLBY AND MARY AINSWORTH here

Furthermore there is ample evidence should anyone care to delve, that shows children who have their needs responded to when small actually grow up to be more secure, independent, empathic etc. ?Are these traits you typically associate with self centered people? ?Let's be clear there is a distinct difference in responsive and permissive, buying little Jimmy everything they want and never saying no is not AP.

Don't the numerous cultures who practice AP as standard demonstrate the above is clearly bluster? ?Mongolia?is just one example.

I absolutely don't think AP is at all about "women existing to serve and sacrifice for their children" - otherwise how come some parents work outside the home? ?How come in some families it's the dad/partner who does the attached parenting? ?

?In fact one of the principles as outlined by??Attached Parenting International is:

"Strive for Balance in Personal and Family Life -?it is easier to be emotionally responsive when you feel in balance. Create a support network, set realistic goals, put people before things, and don't be afraid to say "no". Recognize individual needs within the family and meet them to the greatest extent possible without compromising your physical and emotional health. Be creative, have fun with parenting, and take time to care for yourself."
.
Consider for a moment that a mum who chooses to stay at home with her children might feel the only thing she has sacrificed is perhaps a job she may not have actually liked that much anyway! ?That by being responsive to their child's needs as a couple, doesn't in turn automatically means their needs or those of their partner are not met (in fact the opposite may be true). ?Even if the mother does consider her parenting style a sacrifice, isn't that her choice if she feels the payoff is worth it?

As Charlene noted on Facebook:

"It's ok to make sacrifices for career goals...live apart for a job, work and go to school...or for a nation's goals...be deployed and you're a hero...but make sacrifices for a few years for your children and woah nelly, we can't have that. Why is it that traditionally feminine things are still looked down upon? How is it equal rights if we have to change our life choices to the ones they attribute with value in order to be seen as worthy?"
I also wonder how often AP is a barrier to intimacy as Jill suggests. ?If only one parent is on board with any parenting style, this in itself may cause a barrier between parents, ?I've heard this being the case for couples where dad wants to leave baby to cry it out and the mum feels this is?instinctively?wrong. ?But do we really not think "detached parents" don't have differing opinions too?

If both parents share the same principles around raising children, and can listen and acknowledge their child's needs, does it make sense they then ignore each others?

As another Facebook reader said:
"We AP big time, but we also have a very attached marriage, and this article is very far from reality. =P My husband and I have been an "every day" couple from the beginning and that won't be changing anytime soon. ;)"
Something else rarely mentioned is that breastfeeding bedsharing mums often?get more sleep and of a better quality ie they are more well rested. ?From my own experience this is certainly true - with number one, several night wanderings to the "nursery" plus time spent then trying to get baby to settle alone, meant the only thing I was interested in on hitting the sheets was sleep - and pretty please let it be for more than 1 1/2 hours!

Several mums commented that breastfeeding gives them a super quick easy way to get their baby back to sleep in the evenings, also freeing up more "couple time". ?Those that had followed a more detached parenting style with some babies, but used more attached techniques with others - ?all commented that the latter was so convenient, easy and ultimately less time consuming that again more "sexy time" was on the cards.

And seriously, is having a toddler in the bed really likely to be a barrier to sex if two people want it? ?Lordy I'm gagging but darn the toddlers in the bed, that's that then...With that knowledge we should be able to?eradicate?teen pregnancy by banning the bedroom right?

Or sigh who has the energy when they've been looking after children, breastfeeding and APing all day, I was so much more up for it?when I was making up 10 bottles per day according to DOH guidelines, sterilising them, doing a nursery run before commuting to my high powered full time job, right before coming home and sleep training the baby...

For real?

I'm sure lots of AP couples have less sex than one or the other would like, but I'm equally sure that's the case for couples with an opposing parenting style. ?One mum raised a good point on Facebook:

"I do actually wonder if these men aren't "Getting enough" because they are general arses rather than their wife's breastfeeding habits ? You have to feel an attraction to someone mentally and physically to want to have sex with them"
And perhaps for men not getting it, blaming the parenting style might seem logical and convenient - rather than considering other possibilities.

A dad on Facebook summed up the first article well

"I would suggest that, because he may not want to look too closely at other aspects of his relationship, he may be oversimplifying things down to this one issue."
Or perhaps a bit more bluntly by this mum:
"Sounds like he needs to up his game and learn the art of seduction... Being a twat is a major turn off to most women, including breastfeeding women"
Another added:
"The problem he described was not that his wife didn't want to have sex with him, or that he wasn't allowed to touch her breasts, it was that the sight of her breastfeeding made him physically ill. Sounds like he needs professional help. He's the one causing the marriage to be sexless."
And surely no self respecting feminist would suggest a woman sacrifices something so significant to her own health because it turns a man off? (well this particular "man" anyway!) ?Burn your bra's but heaven forbid a man can't find his wife erotic if she also uses that breast to feed a baby. ?Back to the seemingly "single function" of breasts.

Another mum tackled Jill's comment of "Breastfeeding for five years can be a real issue; denying that isn't particularly helpful." head on:

"for whom the issue??
where are these miserable husbands??
'oh no, we hate doing sex on the couch/kitchen counter/stairs/in the shower/spare room/living
room rug in front of the fire!' I hear them cry
'it's so terrible for me to see that my child is secure, nourished and healthy, and I hate watching those loving snuggles!' they moan
'and knowing that my wife's risks of cancer are reduced every day she continues makes me so sad!'
oh? there are none of these?
well that may be because we try to marry the sane fellas. The mad ones are all out there holding their wife back from comforting their crying offspring."
What's also fascinating is that nearly one in four American couples sleep in separate bedrooms or beds, the National Sleep Foundation reported in a 2005 survey. Recent studies in England and Japan have found similar results. And the National Association of Home Builders says it expects 60 percent of custom homes to have dual master bedrooms by 2015.
Better quality sleep and "keeping the marriage fresh and frisky" are just two reasons cited here?and?here?- nothing to do with children. ?Yet throw children into the mix and mention your husband heads off to a separate space whilst you sleep with the toddler, and most are gasping, breaking out in a cold sweat and offering marriage guidance. So is AP code for neglected relationships in favour of the children? ?I will let Facebook fans again sum up:
"Hmm... well I co-slept with all of them... including twins and... let's put it this way... I have five children!"
"I think it has spiced up our sex life. We have to be more creative. Like I saw on a t-shirt once, "Co-sleepers get dirty... in the garden." Lol?"
"I always wonder do these people not have sofas? or, a la postman always rings twice, kitchen tables? ;-D"
"Do these people not have any imagination? DH and I have not slept in the same bed for the last 13 years. He got kicked out after baby no 4, because he snores and no one got any sleep. We have managed another five babies since then, def hasn't caused us any issues ;-)"
"Being too tired to do the deed with a small person to take care of is a FAR bigger reason for less frequent nooky than co-sleeping could ever be. If you both WANT to get amorous, you will find a location to do it. If one of you doesn't, you will find an excuse - and 'the bed is occupied' is an excuse - not a reason?"
"This article is complete balls. Sexless marriage? Really? Are any of us co-sleeping, breastfeeding, AP mothers in a sexless relationship because of our parenting choices? REALLY? Utterly ridiculous."
"Erm I've been bfing for 6 years continuously and am pg with my 4th child (3rd pg since I started bfing) so I really don't think 5ys of bfing causes a sexless marriage and neither would my husband!!"
"Clearly this author has no idea that AP practices are how millions of people have parented from before we came down from the trees."?

Running IT Like a Business ? Candid CIO

July 21, 2012 at 4:25 pm

Recently, somebody challenged me to describe what it means to run IT like a business. This is what I came up with:

  1. Business have customers (not users).
  2. Businesses thrive by providing their customers with goods and services that their customers want at a cost those customers consider a value.

Sometimes we find ourselves providing services that our customers don?t want. That could mean we got ahead of ourselves and started providing a solution without first providing the consulting service that creates the desire to receive the service.

Obama to visit victims and their families

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will fly to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims from the Aurora movie theater shooting, the White House announced, as he and Mitt Romney dialed back their campaigning in the shocked aftermath of the massacre.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer disclosed plans for the visit Saturday night. Aides said Obama's stop would also include meetings with state and local officials.

Friday's deadly rampage briefly silenced the acrimonious presidential contest, with both campaigns cutting short schedules and pulling advertising in Colorado out of respect for the dead and injured.

But for Obama, the pause was to be short-lived. After his Colorado visit, he was to fly Reno, Nev., for a Monday speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, followed by a series of campaign fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state. Romney is also expected to speak to the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."

The White House said Obama received updates Saturday from John Brennan, his homeland security adviser, on the investigation into the shooting and the attempts by authorities to gain access to the suspect's apparently booby-trapped apartment.

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shooting occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shooting served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Other prominent lawmakers called the shooting a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.

"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shooting could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.

As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

8 Business Experts Provide Tips on Social Media Customer Service

Here at RingCentral, we participate in social networks primarily to provide customer care to our community. We listen through Twitter, Facebook, and other networks ? and we?re happy to respond to your inquiries, feedback, and troubleshooting needs. We try our best to improve your experience, and we get by with a little help from the experts. These business luminaries provide great advice on delivering excellent social media customer care.

1.?If you do just one thing, participate. Listening to what your customers are saying is a great first step, but to actually take full advantage of the power of social you need to participate, one-on-one, with your customers.?

-Dave Evans, VP of Social Strategy?and Co-Founder at Social Dynamx

2. Your best investment in caring for your customers is to be a good listener. Hop onto social media to hear what your clients and prospects are saying. Show empathy when it?s warranted to turn a sour situation into a win. Nurture your raving fans, and you may just never have to sell again!
-Denise O?Berry,?Small Business Expert

3.?Social media isn?t seen as a marketing strategy by your customer; it?s seen as an open door to communicate, voice opinions, ask questions and ? especially ? complain about your products and services. The means with which your company handles those requests in public can be the best marketing strategy you?ve ever deployed? or it can spell doom.
-Douglas Karr,?CEO of?DK New Media, Founder of Marketing Technology Blog, and Author of?Corporate Blogging for Dummies

4. So many companies are diving into the social media space with the all-encompassing customer acquisition angle in mind. But social networks, especially platforms like Facebook, are opt-in channels where the audience must want to follow you. This is inherently a customer retention environment. Sure, you can gain customers through social channels, but if you?re not caring for the ones you have first, you?re missing the boat ? and perhaps losing them while you?re at it.
-Jason Falls, CEO of?Social Media Explorer

5.?Whether your company likes it or not, customer service is now a spectator sport. Social media is the new telephone, and if companies in your category are assisting customers via social channels and your company is not, the perception is that you care less than they do. Rightly or wrongly, we?ve found ourselves in the middle of a real-time customer service arms race.
-Jay Baer,?Social Media Keynote Speaker and?Co-Author of ?The NOW Revolution

6.?If your business is looking to add customer care to your social media plan, the very first thing you need to do is set the parameters of how you will deal with the requests. Spell out on your profiles the time available, type of assistance (if there are limitations) and include the names of any specific people monitoring the social media account (e.g., ?monitored by Jane and Craig?) so that people can know who they are connecting with. On the back-end, your organization needs to be clear on how you will deal with both positive and negative comments. Have a strategy in place for how the support team will respond.
-
Kathy Colaiacovo,?Online Marketing & Social Media Consultant with?Social 4 Business?and?Principal at?Time on Task Virtual Assistant Services

7.?For corporate brands using their social media presence to engage the public in a customer care capacity, the key to success is responsiveness, especially on Twitter. Honest feedback is a gift to a company. While no one likes to see unhappy customers criticizing their brand, one upset customer does not mean a crisis. Create a routine policy for how to respond to customer service challenges, so that your most outspoken customers do not get rewarded for taking their grief to Facebook.
