The latest from MMA's yentes includes a Bellator championship bout and the debut of a jiu-jitsu pioneer.

-- Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced on "MMA Uncensored" that Eric Prindle -- who just won the Bellator heavyweight tournament by Thiago Santos not making weight -- will take on champ Cole Konrad for the title on April 13 in Atlantic City.

-- UFC 145's pay-per-view will feature six main card fights. Miguel Torres' bout with Michael McDonald will now be on on the pay-per-view that will be headlined by Jon Jones putting his belt on the line against Rashad Evans.

-- At UFC 148, Melvin Guillard will try to snap his losing streak against Team Blackhouse fighter Fabricio Camoes. Guillard's last two bouts were first-round losses to Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon, while Camoes is coming off of a submission win over Tom Hayden.

-- Milton Viera, a jiu-jitsu star who is credited for creating the anaconda choke, will make his UFC debut at at UFC 147 in Brazil against Felipe Arantas. (An earlier version of this post said anaconda joke. While it was a typo, it was at least a funny one.)

Gay man comes out on Facebook; friends supportive but offended by his lack of tech savvy

(Facebook)Even with support for gay rights steadily on the rise, it undoubtedly still takes a lot of courage to come out of the closet. But what do you when your friends and family are more concerned with your level of technical sophistication employed across social media, rather than the message itself?

Via Happy Place, that seems to be the issue for one Facebook user who used his account to open up about his previously undisclosed sexuality. Sure, his friends and family are supportive and proud of his decision. But they appear a little offended by the seemingly bland manner in which he displayed the announcement.

In his announcement, the Facebook user (whose name has been redacted) writes, "I've been in the closet for far too long, so here goes: I'm gay. I've known, in retrospect, for about eight years. This is the easiest way for me to deal with it; I apologize if anyone feels affronted that I didn't tell them in person. As proof that this is not an account hack, I have posted a somewhat longer post on my blog."

The initial responses are entirely positive, with comments including, "Good on you man :)" and "takes guts to broadcast this."

But then, a small wave of criticism begins. One friend writes, "I like the proof of no hack ? Could you possibly link a style sheet to that html? I hate bland markup."

And another person jokes, "could you please make your blog post that says you're gay look prettier?"

The first commenter responds, "I swear I wasn't mocking. I just work on asp.net stuff all day and I've grown sick of ugly sites."

And then, the stylistic critiques continue, "Good advice, especially if [he] decides to come out of the closet again, he can do so in style and elegance."

"So we can call this attempt the prototype shall we?"

"We have to assign a metric to this scoring system, I'd say a 2.6."

Finally, the Facebook user who made the announcement jumps into the fray to let his tech-savvy friends know that enough is enough.

"No, I'm an advocate of plain HTML, so I'm not going to gay up my coming out post."

Grocer runs 'swap meat' for pink slime ground beef

Perhaps being the first supermarket chain to put a positive spin on the processed ground beef known as ?pink slime,? a Southern California company offered a ?swap meat? Wednesday -- exchanging competitor?s ground beef that contains it for their own that doesn?t.

Fresh & Easy, which operates 185 stores in Northern and Central California, Arizona and Nevada, offered to replace up to 2 lbs. per customer.

?We have never, would never, and will never use the ammonia treated filler known as ?pink slime? in our ground beef,? the company said on their website.

?We?ve had in incredible response,? said spokesman Brendan Wonnacott. ?It?s not about the cost (to the company), it?s about the opportunity for customers to get ground beef they know they can trust and learn about us.?

Though the promotion was scheduled to end Wednesday he said ?we?ll see if there is an opportunity to expand it.?

The ammonia-treated ingredient known by the industry as "lean, finely textured beef" has been used for years but recently became a target of activists seeking to have it banned from supermarkets and school lunches. The U.S. Department of Agriculture decided to allow school districts to stop using it.

It is made from fatty bits of leftover meat that are heated, spun to remove the fat, compressed into blocks and exposed to ammonia to kill bacteria. Producers often mix the filler into fattier meat to produce an overall leaner product and reduce their costs.

The three largest U.S. grocers, Kroger, Safeway and Supervalu, last week said they would discontinue using it.

The Des Moines Register reported Wednesday that removing the additive from the food supply would be the equivalent of losing 1.5 million cattle and will likely drive up the cost of ground beef.

A Tyson food executive told Reuters on Wednesday worries about it had hurt demand for ground beef. Tyson is the largest meat processor in the U.S.

Fresh & Easy began opening stores in 2007. It is owned by the British company Tesco, the world?s third largest retailer by revenues.

Hair loss/thinning as a vegan?
To summarise my situation, I went vegan in early August last year. For the first few months I was the healthiest I have ever been. I felt great and started becoming more active, then made the decision to lose a bit of weight in October (something I had wanted to do for a long time, but struggled with when I was still being tempted by dairy chocolates and greasy chicken). I got a bit carried away to say the least and ended up at a BMI of 17 earlier this year. While I was at that low weight, my hair started thinning. I attributed it to me being underweight and not eating enough, but while I was getting back to a healthy weight and eating much more, including much more protein than I had been eating, the hair thinning has only slowed and not stopped. There is still substantial hair loss whenever I wash my hair (it has nothing to do with the products I use, I've been using the same products in my hair since August). It's not too noticeable yet but obviously I don't want to let my hair keep falling out, because at this rate it will be quite noticeable within the next few months or even weeks. Anyway, I am going to ask my doctor about it next time I see her, which will be in two or three weeks time, but for now, does anyone know what could be the problem here? I eat quite a bit of protein, sometimes over 60g in a day but usually somewhere between 30 and 50g. I take a women's daily multivitamin as well a vitamin d supplement prescribed by my doctor. I've tried Googling this but every article I read talks about protein when I really don't think that's my problem! (as stated, I get enough protein!) Could it be a sort of delayed effect from the emotional and physical stress I was going through in January/February with being underweight? And if so, if I keep eating healthily will the hair loss stop? Btw, I'm still vegan and plan to stay that way :)

Among plant foods, L-lysine is only found in high amounts in legumes, and a vegan who doesn't eat many legumes could find themselves falling short on lysine. But in one study, adding L-lysine (at 1.5 - 2 g/day for 6 months) to iron supplementation in such women did increase iron stores and decreased hair loss by one half." Reports: 3 slain in shooting at Jewish school in France

Updated at 5:25 a.m ET: A man opened fire outside a Jewish school in Toulouse in southwestern France Monday, killing one adult and two children, a police source told Reuters.

The adult victim was believed to be a rabbi, al-Jazeera English TV reported. French newspaper Le Figaro (website in French) reported that the shooter fled the scene on a black scooter, according to NBC News.

Two other people were injured in the attack on private school Ozar Hatorah, which is located in Jolimont district of Toulouse, in the northeast of the city, a city official told The Associated Press.

French media reported that security was being tightened at all Jewish schools in the country.

The shootings come days after three soldiers were killed in two separate shootings in the same region by a man who escaped from the scene by scooter, Reuters reported.

The BFM TV news channel said that the gun used in the attack at the school was of the same caliber as that used in the soldiers' shootings.

France's chief rabbi, Gilles Bernheim, said he was "horrified" by the incident, according to BFM's website (in French).?

Israel's foreign ministry also expressed dismay at the incident.

"We are horrified by this attack and we trust the French authorities to shed full light on this tragedy and bring the perpetrators of these murders to justice," Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told the AFP news agency.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was on his way to Toulouse Monday, NBC News said, citing local media reports, and French Interior Minister Claude Gueant broke off a visit in northeastern France to travel there, the police source told Reuters.

Investigators said Friday that the murders of two French paratroopers in southwest France?Thursday were linked to the killing of another soldier in Toulouse at the weekend, after they discovered the same weapon was used in both crimes.

Two uniformed French soldiers were shot dead and a third seriously injured by a masked gunman Thursday as they tried to withdraw money from a cash machine in the town of Montauban, close to the barracks of the 17th paratroop regiment.

At the weekend, a 30-year-old soldier in civilian clothes was shot dead in the nearby city of Toulouse.

Michel Valet, the public prosecutor of Toulouse, said authorities had not identified a suspect, or a motive for the killing.

"A link has been made with certainty between the two events in Toulouse and Montauban," he told a press conference on Friday.

French officials evacuated 1,500 residents from their homes in Marseille, in the south of France, on Sunday after discovering a live bomb that was placed there by Germans during World War II, LaProvence.com reported. ?

The bomb was discovered by builders working on a retirement home construction site, The Riviera Times reported. The bomb, wrapped with a cable and pillows to absorb any potential shock, was gently lifted for fear that it might explode.

Neutralizing the bomb took 40 minutes. Deactivating the bomb was a delicate process, one that LaProvence.com detailed in a minute-by-minute account.

The massive bomb, which took up the better part of a moving truck, was transported Sunday afternoon to Canjuers military camp, where it will be destroyed, LaProvence.com reported.

Giuliana Rancic: Breast cancer hasn't changed me, I'm still shallow ...

Giuliana Rancic says her breast cancer battle hasn't changed her and she's still the same "shallow" person she was before.? "My first day back [to work], I walked in and these girls I'd seen everyday -- my assistant, my hair and makeup girls, who I'd have fun with and be crazy with -- all had this sad look in their eyes. It was like, 'Hey, guys, cut the bullsh-t. I'm the exact same person I was before. I'm still shallow, I still love clothes, I still want to talk fashion, I still want to gossip, so lay it on me.,'" the E! News host and Giuliana & Bill star told Glamour magazine in a recent interview with her husband Bill Rancic.

"They were like, 'Thank God.'"

Rancic -- who originally revealed her breast cancer?last fall?-- returned to work in December just two weeks after she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery?when prior attempts at radiation treatment didn't eradicate her cancerous mass.

Before?driving to work on December 27, Rancic told Glamour she had "emailed the wardrobe girl at E! and asked her, 'Can you find anything that zips up, that's easy to put on?' So I was wearing a surgical bra under these designer clothes. It didn't matter. I was just happy to be in my element, to feel normal again. I'll be totally honest. While I was recovering, I was thinking, 'I'm really going to be asking people what they're wearing?' I didn't know if I could find the joy in it again. But it didn't take long."

During the recovery process at home, Rancic fought to overcome her "shallowness," because she was "terrified" to face her new body, and as a result, avoiding doing so for quite some time.

"At first I didn't want to look in the mirror, because I felt like, 'I'm getting better every day and this is about my health, so I shouldn't get bogged down by what I see in the mirror.' I knew I wasn't going to look like a bikini model, so why look? Why even put the image in my head? Then one night before we went to bed, I was in the bathroom changing, and I decided I wanted to see what I was dealing with, and I wanted to do it alone. So I unzipped and just looked," Rancic explained.

"Then I called Bill into the bathroom because I was torn. There were scars and bruising and part of me felt terrified, but part of me felt like, 'Hey, they actually don't look as bad as I thought.' I didn't know whether to cry or be happy. I think I started going into a little bit of shock."

Rancic told Glamour that she worried her husband would "hate" her new breasts at the time, but Bill Rancic insisted he thought they looked great.

"He said, 'Are you OK?' I was just staring at them, and I said, 'They're not bad, huh?' And he said, 'Honey, they're amazing.' I had thought I was going to be terrified of what I saw; I thought I would look like a monster. So that was good. And every day I turned a corner," Rancic added.

Rancic said she believes that everything happens for a reason, including why she initially got her job at E! News.

"So many have written us or tweeted us, 'Hey, I finally got my wife to go in for her first mammogram,' or 'Got checked out, thank you.' Not one or two but thousands. And it resulted in three girls in their thirties who I know about, friends of friends, finding out they had cancer. We've been given this incredible platform, and we think it was for a reason. I truly believe that," Rancic explained.

"When I got my job at E!, I was the thirty-ninth person who auditioned. I wasn't the prettiest, I wasn't the smartest, I wasn't the most talented. And I always wondered why I got the job. Now I think God knew I wouldn't be a selfish little cow with this platform, and I'd actually try to do something good with it."

Also during their interview with Glamour, Rancic and her husband said they still plan on having children whether it means undergoing more fertility treatments or ultimately adopting. The couple also intends to vacation as much as possible this year and renew their wedding vows this September for their five-year anniversary.?

The millions of people whose genes make them prone to obesity aren't at the mercy of nature. How they choose to spend their free time can make a big difference in their waistline, according to new research presented today at an American Heart Association (AHA) meeting in San Diego. Watching TV for two hours each day increases the effect of certain obesity-related genes by as much as 25%, the researchers estimate. If, on the other hand, people with a strong genetic predisposition to obesity spend one hour each day walking briskly or engaging in comparable exercise, they can halve the genes' effect. "In terms of evolution, this makes sense," says Dr. Roxanne Sukol, a preventive medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study. "We didn't evolve to sit still for hours a day." Health.com: 6 ways to sit less every day To explore the interaction between behavior and genes, Harvard researchers analyzed data on more than 12,000 men and women participating in two large studies of health professionals. The researchers measured the participants' genetic risk by identifying how many of the 32 known variants of the so-called obesity geneeach person had. (The gene is officially known as the fat mass and obesity associated, or FTO, gene.) Roughly half of the general population has some genetic risk for obesity, says lead author Qibin Qi, Ph.D., a research fellow in nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. At the same time, Qi and his colleagues looked at how many hours per week each of the participants spent in front of the TV, as well as how much time they devoted to physical activity. Two years into the study, the researchers also recorded the participants' body mass index (BMI), a ratio of height to weight used to measure body fat. Health.com: The worst habits for your heart Each additional obesity-related gene variant was associated with a 0.13-unit increase in BMI, the researchers found. To put it another way, the average person with 7 to 8 variants can expect to have a BMI roughly one unit higher than it would be without the variants. (One BMI unit is equivalent to about six pounds on a 5-foot, 6-inch woman.) The influence of the gene variants, however, appeared to be strongest in people who watched the most TV. The variants' effect on BMI was about four times greater in people who spent 40 hours or more per week in front of the TV than it was in those who watched an hour per week or less. "Prolonged TV watching exacerbates the effect of the gene," Qi says. By the same token, weakening the genes' effect was as simple as switching off the television and going for a brisk walk. The average difference in BMI between a person with the highest genetic obesity risk and a person of identical height with the lowest risk would be cut in half if the high-risk person were to walk for an hour each day, Qi and his colleagues estimate. Health.com: Walk a little, lose a lot The main problem with TV watching is that it tends to involve so much sitting, Qi says. As long as they keep moving while they watch, people don't necessarily need to miss their favorite shows. "Rather than just sitting there, I have a better idea: When they watch, they should exercise," he says. "There's nothing wrong with TV per se, but TV watching may be indicative of a sedentary lifestyle." Sukol often recommends pedometers to patients who are trying to be more active. The devices enable patients to track their progress by measuring the number of steps they take each day, and they also motivate people to keep walking. "Human beings are designed to move," Sukol says. "If we're not moving, we put ourselves at risk." Qi and his colleagues presented their findings today at the AHA's annual meeting on nutrition, physical activity, and metabolism. Unlike the research published in medical journals, the study has not been thoroughly reviewed by other experts in the field. Even if you weren't tuned into the tech festival SWSX, you may have been thinking it would be easier to ignore?social networking sites?and hope they?ll go away. They won?t. The age of social media and openly sharing information to find others with shared interests beyond geography is here to stay. While navigating tween and teen years in real life can be precarious, it?s equally important these days to learn the process of ?finding? and defining oneself in the online realm as well.

The best social media sites for kids and tweens (ages 7 to 13) adhere to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which regulates how much personal information sites can ask from kids under 13 years old, among other things. Like?good kids' online gaming sites, most of these sites require a parental account, or for parents to prove they are who they say they are via a one-time credit card verification (typically requiring a $1 fee).
