Can you earn equity from purchasing a foreclosed ... - Zillow Real ...

I am trying to understand how the concept of home equity applies to distressed properties. For example, if a home is valued at $100,000, but has been foreclosed and is now being offered at $60,000, will you have $40,000 in home equity after the purchase?

Lastly, let's say after you purchase the foreclosed property, you invest $30,000 into the place and the house now appraises for $120,000. Will you have $60,000 in home equity since you originally bought the place for $60,000? This oversimplified, but I hope you all can get what I'm asking.
