OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) ? Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Saturday that he was "dead wrong" with a prediction that the U.S. housing market would begin to recover by now, but he remains optimistic about the nation's economy.
In his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Buffett said he is sure housing will recover eventually and help bring down the nation's unemployment rate. But he did not predict when that will happen.
Investors eagerly await the letter from Buffett, 81, the so-called Oracle of Omaha, who built a roughly $44 billion fortune by following a steadfast, no-nonsense investing strategy.
Buffett said housing "remains in a depression of its own," but he predicted, in typical plainspoken style, that the housing market will come back because some human factors can't be denied forever.
"People may postpone hitching up during uncertain times, but eventually hormones take over," he wrote. "And while 'doubling-up' may be the initial reaction of some during a recession, living with in-laws can quickly lose its allure."
The housing prediction proved painful for Berkshire Hathaway. It owns more than 80 subsidiaries, including the Geico insurance company and See's Candy, and five of them rely heavily on construction activity.
Those businesses, which include Acme Brick, Clayton Homes and Shaw carpet, generated pre-tax profits of $513 million last year. That's well off the $1.8 billion those companies added to Berkshire in 2006.
Berkshire's insurance companies took $1.7 billion in catastrophe losses last year, including from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Berkshire reported only $154 million in underwriting profit, down from $1.3 billion the previous year.
But several of Berkshire's larger non-insurance businesses ? Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, MidAmerican Energy, Marmon Group, Lubrizol and Iscar ? all generated record earnings in 2011.
That helped Berkshire as a whole to generate $10.3 billion in net income, or $6,215 per Class A share, last year, down from nearly $13 billion, or $7,928 per share, in 2010.
A Class A share of Berkshire stock, which has never been split by the company, traded for $120,000 on Friday. Its more affordable Class B shares traded for about $80.
Buffett reassured Berkshire shareholders that the company has someone in mind to replace him eventually, but did not name the successor. He emphasized that he has no plans to leave.
Glenn Tongue, a managing partner at T2Partners investment firm, said he was struck by the fact that Buffett chose to deal with the succession topic as one of the first items in his letter.
"I think this was a forceful and stronger attempt to put this issue to bed," Tongue said.
Buffett offered a couple of details about Berkshire's succession planning in this year's letter. Investors have long worried about who will replace Buffett as Berkshire chairman and CEO.
Buffett said the Berkshire board is enthusiastic about the executive it has picked and said there are two good back-up candidates.
"When a transfer of responsibility is required, it will be seamless, and Berkshire's prospects will remain bright," Buffett said.
Previously, Buffett had said only that the board had three internal candidates for the CEO job. Berkshire plans to split Buffett's jobs into three parts to replace him with a CEO, a chairman and several investment managers.
Even though the successor wasn't named, stockbroker and author Andy Kilpatrick said the way Buffett described the person makes him more confident that the leading candidate is Ajit Jain, who runs Berkshire's reinsurance division.
"The more I think about it, the more I think we have a successor," said Kilpatrick, who wrote "Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett."
Besides Jain, the other Berkshire managers believed to be possible successors as CEO are Greg Abel, president and CEO of MidAmerican; Tony Nicely, chief executive of Geico; and Burlington Northern Santa Fe CEO Matt Rose.
Berkshire has also cleared up some succession questions over the past two years by hiring two hedge fund managers, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Buffett said those two have the "brains, judgment and character" to manage Berkshire's entire portfolio eventually.
Buffett said Combs built a $1.75 billion portfolio last year and Weschler is in the process of doing the same.
Buffett said he spent $67 million last fall buying back Berkshire stock for the first time since taking over the firm in 1965 because he believed it was undervalued. He said he regrets buying out shareholders at prices less than what the stock is worth.
Buffett has authorization to buy back stock anytime it is selling for less than 110 percent of its book value.

A&M hosts Big 12 Track and Field Championships

Texas A&M will play host to the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Track. The men?s and women?s field will feature eight teams among the nation?s top 25, with Texas A&M?s men ranked 8th and the women 9th. But rankings, as Texas A&M has come to know, are worth as much as the paper they are printed on.
After all, last year?s indoor season saw the men take 2nd at Nationals after claiming their first-ever Big 12 title while the women finished 5th at Nationals and had their four-year conference winning run snapped. The outdoor season brought college?s first-ever 3-peat in track and field history to add to Texas A&M?s Big 12 Conference Title sweep.
But many of last year?s stars ? among them Bowerman Award winner Jessica Beard ? are gone due to graduation or eligibility. In fact, the only returning individual Big 12 champion from Texas A&M is 800 meter runner Joey Roberts.
Not a problem.
As of this story, the men?s and women?s programs have broken 17 school records in 13 events. Six record holders ? Joey Roberts (800 meters), Kevin Burnett (5,000 meters), Natosha Rogers ( 5,000 meters), Laura Asimakis (pole vault), Casey Strong (weight throw) and Distance Medley Relay of James Bonn, Michael Preble, Joey Roberts, and Henry Lelei ? will enter the conference meet ranked first in the Big 12 in their respective events.
Action begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday. The multi-events open the competition at 11am on Friday. Prelims in running events are slated for 2pm while field events start at 4pm.
Running finals on the first day include the 5,000 meter and distance medley relay, which start at 7:50pm. Saturday?s finals begin at 3pm, starting with the conclusion of the heptathlon.

Jacobe writes this in response to the most recent quarterly Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business survey. Although small business hiring conditions are the best they have been since 2008, they are still not exceptionally good with 22 percent saying they expect to hire more people and 8 percent saying they plan to reduce the number of jobs at their company. Moreover 66 percent say they are worried about the US economy and one in four fear they may not be in business one year from now.
85 percent of small business owners say they are not hiring; among these, the top reasons for not doing so include not needing additional employees, concerns about cash flows and the US economy. About half of this group listed potential health care costs and new government regulations as reasons for not hiring.
These results have several implications for government action. Some may look at these numbers and conclude government should spend additional money, or ?stimulus? funds, to create cash flows and work projects for these companies to encourage them to hire. Others will look at this data and conclude government cannot artificially bolster sustained demand for these companies but instead should look to repeal excessive regulation and stop enacting new regulations.

Gardner-Webb's Life of the Scholar Conference puts Undergrad ...
Community Invited to Attend Multidisciplinary Conference on Feb. 25?
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. ? Gardner-Webb?s annual Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference (LOTS-MC) puts some of the University?s best undergraduate and faculty research on display. This year?s conference, set for Sat., Feb. 25 at the Boiling Springs campus, is free and open to the community. Lunch is available for $15.
The event begins with registration and an opening ceremony in Ritch Banquet Hall at 9 a.m.? More than two dozen student presentations will then be organized by topic into several concurrent sessions.? There will also be a faculty showcase after lunch, and an awards reception with refreshments.? The event will conclude by 4 p.m., though attenders may come and go in between various sessions.
?This year, we?ll have presentations in art, English, sociology, education, psychology, athletic training, and even musical performance.? It truly is an interdisciplinary experience,? said Dr. Shea Stuart, professor of English and a LOTS-MC sponsor.? ?It?s a wonderful opportunity for the community to come and learn interesting new things, in the spirit of lifelong learning.?

It?s a safe environment, because the judges offering feedback are also professors who want the best for these students.? Obama plan would end dozens of business tax breaks (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration's corporate tax reform plan would end "dozens and dozens" of tax breaks, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday as he defended the White House's election-year call for higher taxes on the wealthy.
Within days, the administration intends to unveil a blueprint aimed at eliminating inequities in the corporate tax system and lowering the top rate.
Companies, which pay wildly different levels of taxes, are clamoring for a cut in the corporate tax rate - which tops out at 35 percent -- but disagree about how to strip out preferences that benefit selected industries.
Geithner spoke before the Senate Finance Committee a day after President Barack Obama unveiled a $3.8 trillion budget-and-tax proposal that called for aggressive government spending to boost the economy and higher taxes on the rich.
"We think they can handle it. We think they can afford it," Geithner said.
Few elements of the budget are expected to win approval this year in a divided U.S. Congress as elections approach in November. Republicans view the budget as a campaign document, and Obama supporters also see it as an important tool for him to communicate his spending priorities to voters.
Republicans criticized Obama's budget, saying it chooses winners and losers and moves away from tax reform.
For example, Obama wants to end a manufacturing tax break for oil and gas companies, but expand it for high-tech companies. "Obviously not everyone is going to be playing by the same set of rules," Republican Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona said.
Geithner said it was a "fair question."
He said the Obama plan would "wipe out a very substantial, dozens and dozens of special tax preferences," in the corporate code, but keep a "very limited" number targeting incentives for "creating and building stuff in the United States."
Republican Representative Dave Camp, the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' tax-law writing Ways and Means committee, has set a goal of trimming the top 35 percent corporate rate to 25 percent.
Senators from both parties said Obama needs to use the bully pulpit to push major changes to the tax code.
The last time major rewrite of the U.S. tax code came in 1986 under Republican President Ronald Reagan.
"The key in 1986 was of course the presidential bully pulpit and that the executive branch every single time out talked about how you had to fit the pieces together," Democratic Senator Ron Wyden said.
Obama said earlier he was "hopeful" of a deal on extending a 2 percentage point cut in the payroll tax paid by workers, which will expire at the end of the month without a deal between sparring lawmakers.
FISCAL CLIFF
The payroll tax extension is the first among many deadlines approaching in coming months that could hamper the fragile economic recovery.
At the end of the year, individual tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush are set to expire. In addition, $1.2 trillion in automatic budget cuts across all government programs are set to kick in as part of last summer's deal to raise the debt ceiling.
"A perfect fiscal storm is waiting at the end of the year," Senator Max Baucus, Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said.
Geithner agreed that the combination of the deficit reduction measures and higher taxes would hurt the economy.
But he said the administration is proposing to extend the bulk of the tax cuts so that only the wealthiest would be affected. "The impact of that tax reform would be very, very modest," he said.
Geithner rejected Republican suggestions that the administration should make drastic cuts to government spending even though the U.S. deficit has soared to $1.3 trillion and the federal debt has topped $15 trillion.
"That would damage economic growth," Geithner said.

Prosecutors seek to reinstate Knox conviction (AP)
MILAN ? Italian prosecutors asked the country's highest criminal court on Tuesday to reinstate the murder convictions of American Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend in the brutal slaying of a British student.
Perugia prosecutors filed the 112-page appeal, more than four months after an appeals court threw out the convictions against Knox, 24, and Raffaele Sollecito, 27.
Prosecutors Giovanni Galati said he is "very convinced" that Sollecito and Knox were responsible for the Nov. 1, 2007, stabbing death of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student who shared an apartment with Knox in the university town of Perugia.
Galati told reporters in Pergugia that the appeals sentence must be thrown out, saying it was full of "ommissions and many errors," the news agency ANSA reported.
The prosecutors appeal, which was expected, marks the third and final stage in the criminal case against Knox and Sollecito.
A statement released by the Knox family spokesman Tuesday said the appeals trial clearly established Knox's innocence. It called the latest appeal "simply another example of harassment by the prosecution against Amanda."
Knox and Sollecito were found guilty in a lower court of slaying Kercher in what prosecutors described as a sex-fueled attack, and sentenced to 26 years and 25 years respectively. An appeals court then said the evidence did not hold up, freeing Knox to return home to the United States after serving four years in prison. Sollecito lives in Italy.
Luca Maori, Sollecito's lawyer, said the high court is expected to issue its decision toward the end of the year.
The prosecutors move was expected, and Maori said he would file his counter-arguments after going over the prosecutors' appeal.
"We will write our brief to say it's a mistake," Maori said.
The high court cannot hear new evidence, and will make its decision based on what has been submitted in earlier trials.
The fatal blow to the prosecution's case was a court-ordered DNA review in the appellate trial that discredited crucial genetic evidence used to convict Knox and Sollecito in 2009.
Kercher was found slain in a pool of blood in the house she shared with Knox in Perugia. The appeals court in October said the guilty verdicts against the pair were not corroborated by any evidence, and that the court hadn't proven they were in the house when Kercher was killed.
Still, the appellate panel stopped short of saying what might have happened the night of the murder.
A third defendant, Ivory Coast-born drifter Rudy Guede, was convicted in a separate trial of sexually assaulting and stabbing Kercher. His 16-year sentence, reduced in appeal from an initial 30 years, was upheld by Italy's highest court in 2010.

On Path, apps accessing your Contacts, and a better permissions system for iOS
iOS doesn't have a good system for handling app permissions and access to personal information. Perhaps, like with Notification Center, they could draw inspiration from Android?
Earlier this week the internet got itself into a kerfuffle over Path, a small-circle social networking app for the iPhone, and it's open transmission of Contact information from a users phone to Path's servers. It's an important issue to be sure, one worth getting into a kerfuffle over, and Path eventually apologized and vowed to make changes. but Path was only one of many, many apps to act this way.
