The Academic Coordinator-Internships for Internationals is responsible for the academic quality and integrity of the Internship Program for ACP students. The Coordinator is responsible for the smooth operation of all aspects and functions including planning, implementing, and evaluating the Internship-work programs made available to international students in University Extension.
The Coordinator advises students on all aspects of an internship search, and develops a robust list of possible internships for internationals. The focus for the internships is on part-time, non-paid, volunteer positions that give the international student valued experience working in a field of his/her interest. The Coordinator must initiate, develop and maintain relationships with a broad spectrum of companies. The Coordinator must understand the needs of the companies and solicit regular feedback from the internship companies on intern performance.
The Coordinator is responsible for developing a series of information workshops about the internship program that not only promote the program, but result in increasing the number of international participants. The Coordinator also teaches workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills, and career development. Similarly, the Coordinator is responsible for placing students in appropriate internship positions and resolving issues or problems.
B. Assessment of Program and Constituency Needs
The Coordinator is responsible to assess and satisfy student academic and internship needs; regularly analyzes student performance data. The Academic Coordinator counsels students on appropriate work standards, performance expectations, English, writing and communications skills. Provides regular insight to students, companies, teachers, and staff on the needs of the internship constituency. Collaborates with certificate program instructors and professional trade organizations to develop internship leads.
C. Program Activities and Functions
The Academic Coordinator is responsible for the academic quality of the internship program. Responsibilities in this area include: creating relationships with appropriate companies, maintaining a database, placing students, counseling students, resolving problems, overseeing student performance, instructing students on proper interview techniques, resume writing, and business English communication skills. The Academic Coordinator will make recommendations to the Assistant Director of Professional Programs to streamline academic policies and procedures that will enhance the internship program. The Academic Coordinator is required to interface with other International Programs and UNEX staff to coordinate the program in conjunction with other educational opportunities for international students.
D. Academic Instruction and Administrative Responsibilities
The Internship Coordinator also is responsible to develop curriculum and teach classes face-to-face and through online delivery. Classes include resume writing, interviewing skills, business writing and communication. The Coordinator is responsible for administrative responsibilities in support of academic activities including timely recording of student final grades, submission of a class syllabus, posting of regularly scheduled office hours, and ensuring that other instructors adhere to these same duties. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all internship students meet minimum standards of the program.
E. Representative with Other Agencies and Institutions in the Public and Private Sector
The Coordinator acts as a contact for international agents, universities, colleges, and official embassy representatives concerning sponsored internship students. The Coordinator resolves issues concerning these students and prepares appropriate information for these constituencies. As needed, the Coordinator works in collaboration with UNEX Planning Units and instructors involved in the ACP and ECP certificate programs to develop special programs for international internship students. In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Professional Programs, the Coordinator acts on behalf of the unit to develop relationships with universities and corporations to develop appropriate internship opportunities in a broad scope of industries. The Coordinator provides support to the Assistant Director in curriculum development and teaching on an as needed basis. The Coordinator may participate in professional level discussions and conferences in the latest trends within the field.
