Texas A&M will play host to the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Track. The men?s and women?s field will feature eight teams among the nation?s top 25, with Texas A&M?s men ranked 8th and the women 9th. But rankings, as Texas A&M has come to know, are worth as much as the paper they are printed on.
After all, last year?s indoor season saw the men take 2nd at Nationals after claiming their first-ever Big 12 title while the women finished 5th at Nationals and had their four-year conference winning run snapped. The outdoor season brought college?s first-ever 3-peat in track and field history to add to Texas A&M?s Big 12 Conference Title sweep.
But many of last year?s stars ? among them Bowerman Award winner Jessica Beard ? are gone due to graduation or eligibility. In fact, the only returning individual Big 12 champion from Texas A&M is 800 meter runner Joey Roberts.
Not a problem.
As of this story, the men?s and women?s programs have broken 17 school records in 13 events. Six record holders ? Joey Roberts (800 meters), Kevin Burnett (5,000 meters), Natosha Rogers ( 5,000 meters), Laura Asimakis (pole vault), Casey Strong (weight throw) and Distance Medley Relay of James Bonn, Michael Preble, Joey Roberts, and Henry Lelei ? will enter the conference meet ranked first in the Big 12 in their respective events.
Action begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday. The multi-events open the competition at 11am on Friday. Prelims in running events are slated for 2pm while field events start at 4pm.
Running finals on the first day include the 5,000 meter and distance medley relay, which start at 7:50pm. Saturday?s finals begin at 3pm, starting with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
