Bill Ritter said to be under consideration for Energy Secretary

former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter in June 2011 (THE DENVER POST file | Kathryn Scott Osler)

WASHINGTON???Former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter is on the short list to be the next Energy Secretary.

Ritter, a one-term governor who is now leading Colorado State University's Center for the New Energy Economy, is among a small group of unofficial finalists to take over the Department, according to media reports.

Current Secretary Steven Chu has not made any formal announcement, but it has been broadly reported that he is expected to depart the Administration in the next term.

Ritter told The Denver Post Tuesday he was "flattered" to be among such distinguished names.

"It's a crucial time for the country to focus on energy policy among the other priorities," he said. "Energy has to be a priority going forward."

Ritter's push for a "new energy economy" became a top talking point in his four years as governor.

In his current job, he often talks about his balanced approach to boosting domestic energy production, and jobs in Colorado, while being sensitive to Colorado's environment and producing oil and gas in a responsible way.

Ritter has said he is often asked to speak by energy companies who respected his work as governor.

The Western Energy Alliance, an industry trade group, refused to comment on Ritter's consideration.

As governor, Ritter also backed controversial legislation that could lead Xcel Energy to convert three of its coal-fired electric plants to use natural gas. The move won praise from environmentalists and the natural-gas industry ? but scorn from coal backers.

Ritter also successfully boosted the state's renewable energy standard from 20 percent to 30 percent in 2020.

Stuart Sanderson, president of the Colorado Mining Association, did not have immediate comment on the consideration.

Leading the short list of Energy finalists is Tom Steyer, a Democratic donor who helped bankroll an effort to defeat a proposal in California that would have rolled back some of the state's renewable energy efforts. The Washington Post first reported the list of names, including Ritter, this morning.

Also on the list, along with Ritter, is former North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan, Susan Tierney, an assistant energy secretary under the Clinton Administration and Steve Westley, a California businessman, according to The Washington Post.

Upon hearing the news Tuesday, Sen. Mark Udall, a Democrat, called Ritter "a strong advocate for Colorado's all-of-the-above energy policy, that embraces renewables alongside more traditional energy sources, like natural gas. If Secretary Steven Chu were to step down we would lose a strong leader when it comes to pursuing energy security. That said, we need more Colorado commonsense in Washington and I would be proud to support Gov. Ritter playing a greater role in our country's energy policy."

Eric Brown, a spokesman for Gov. John Hickenlooper, said Tuesday he didn't want to speculate "about different Coloradans under consideration for White House appointments."

"But it's not surprising that may be happening given Colorado's role in the West and as a leader in economic development, education, energy and health care," he said.

Scott would be nation's 7th black US senator

Republican Rep. Tim Scott of South Carolina will become the seventh black person to serve in the United State Senate and the first from the South since Reconstruction. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley named Scott on Monday to succeed Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, who announced earlier this month he would resign Jan. 1 to become president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

Other blacks who have served in the U.S. Senate are:

?Hiram Revels of Mississippi, who became the first black senator in 1870. The Mississippi state legislature appointed him during Reconstruction and he served just a year. Senate records describe Revels as an outspoken opponent of racial segregation.

?Blanche K. Bruce, who also represented Mississippi during Reconstruction. He was a former slave who served in the Senate from 1875 to 1881.

?Edward Brooke was the first black elected to the Senate by popular vote and represented Massachusetts for two terms, from 1967 to 1979. He championed mass transit, low-income housing and a higher minimum wage.

?Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois became the first and only female black senator, serving one term, 1993 to 1999. She was a prosecutor before winning political office and called for more restrictive gun laws during her tenure. Defeated in her first re-election bid, she later was U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

?Barack Obama of Illinois was elected to the Senate in November 2004. Four years later, he became the nation's 44th president.

?Roland W. Burris of Illinois was appointed to take Obama's seat on Dec. 31, 2008. He served two years and was reprimanded by the Senate Ethics Committee for being misleading about his appointment to the seat by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Revels, Bruce and Brooke were all Republicans. Moseley Braun, Obama and Burris were all Democrats.

White House: Gun violence is complex problem

(AP) ? The White House says curbing gun violence is a complex problem that will require a "comprehensive solution" including addressing gun control measures.

Still, spokesman Jay Carney says gun control is not the only solution to stopping shootings like the horrific attack at a Connecticut elementary school Friday. He says no single piece of legislation or single action will fully address the problem.

Obama has said he is going to use the "power" of his office to tackle gun violence. Carney says the president will engage the American people and lawmakers on this issue in the coming weeks, as well as meet with law enforcement officials and mental health professionals.

Carney did not offer any specific policy proposals or timeline for tackling gun violence.

Can you earn equity from purchasing a foreclosed ... - Zillow Real ...

I am trying to understand how the concept of home equity applies to distressed properties. For example, if a home is valued at $100,000, but has been foreclosed and is now being offered at $60,000, will you have $40,000 in home equity after the purchase?

Lastly, let's say after you purchase the foreclosed property, you invest $30,000 into the place and the house now appraises for $120,000. Will you have $60,000 in home equity since you originally bought the place for $60,000? This oversimplified, but I hope you all can get what I'm asking.
