Exclusive: James Van Der Beek Joins Dancing with the Stars... on Apartment 23 (omg!)

James Van Der Beek will soon be gunning for the coveted Mirrorball trophy... on Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.

The Dawson's Creek alum stars in ABC's new comedy as a fictionalized version of himself who is BFFs with New Yorker Chloe (Krysten Ritter), the crazy roommate of wide-eyed new gal June (Dreama Walker). This James will join a slew of celebrities competing on Dancing with the Stars, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Exclusive: Thomas Lennon, Bruce Davison heading to Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23

We hit the set to see The Beek strut his stuff ? he actually has moves! ? and to get the scoop on how the Dancing story line came to be. Plus: Which real-life celeb will partner with one of the actual Dancing pros as Van Der Beek's competition?

How did the Dancing with the Stars storyline come to fruition?
James Van Der Beek:
It was an idea that I had. I had been offered [to be on Dancing] a couple times. I always thought it would be kind of fun, but would never do it, but that doesn't mean the Apartment 23 me can't do it! [Laughs] I pitched the story line to [Apartment 23 executive producer] Nahnatchka Khan where I would go on Dancing with the Stars. There's a big joke that I planned out and the only way for it to be funny is if I was a phenomenal dancer.

Lois & Clark's Dean Cain will guest-star as James' nemesis and competition on Dancing with the Stars with real-life pro Karina Smirnoff. How was it creating this rivalry with him?
Van Der Beek:
It's great. Dean's a great sport; he totally gets it. He has great comic timing actually. It's kind of like a brotherhood of people who went through a show where the character's name is in the title. You look at each other, nod and go, "I understand." [Laughs] It was great to have Karina because it felt authentic. I did [ask for tips].

Dean Cain, Kevin Sorbo head to Apartment 23

What kind of competitor is James on Dancing?
Van Der Beek:
This guy is completely blind. He's so narcissistic to the point where he doesn't even realize there are other people in the universe sometimes. This is our way of skewering this kind of actor and pop culture in general. So when he joins Dancing with the Stars, he's convinced this is the be-all, end-all. Everything he does, he does with 100 percent commitment, which is one thing we share. When he first gets his partner, it's not the partner that's going to allow him to win. He just goes into complete panic mode and will stop at nothing until he gets the right partner.

Were you, yourself, nervous about doing the dancing routines?
Van Der Beek:
I grew up playing sports, so it took me like four months to train for that one little scene. I went in thinking I've always wanted to learn how to dance. I'm a pretty good athlete; I could figure this out. After about three or four dance classes, I thought I was looking good, so we recorded it on an iPhone. I watched it and I was absolutely mortified. I look like a jock trying to fumble his way through it. It was horrible. I realized I really had to step it up so many more hours of training followed until I got to the point where it was good enough for the jokes to work. It did not come easily.

What do you think of Van Der Beek joining Dancing on Apartment 23?

ABC is expected to announce an airdate for Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 soon.

Conn. paramedic accused of ambulance sex assault

This Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 photo released by the Hamden, Conn., police department shows Mark Powell, of North Haven, Conn., a paramedic arrested on charges he sexually assaulted a woman in the back of an ambulance. (AP Photo/Hamden Police Department)

(AP) ? A paramedic sexually assaulted a woman as she lay unconscious and strapped to a stretcher in the back of an ambulance on the way to a hospital, police said Friday.

The 22-year-old woman, who had fallen and suffered a head injury at a holiday party, says she woke up to find the man assaulting her inside the ambulance on Dec. 25, according to Hamden police. She said she could not move because she was strapped down.

Mark Powell, 49, of North Haven, surrendered Thursday to face charges of first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint and was released on $25,000 bond. He did not respond to a phone message seeking comment, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Powell's employer, American Medical Response, said he has been placed on administrative leave.

"This kind of behavior is an affront to AMR caregivers across Connecticut who provide high quality care to their patients each and every day, with integrity and compassion," AMR General Manager Charles Babson said.

Police responded to the report of the woman's fall around 3 a.m., and she was treated at the scene. She was allegedly assaulted en route to Yale-New Haven Hospital and contacted police after her release.

Hamden Police Chief Thomas Wydra said the allegations represent "outrageous and horrifying conduct" by an emergency medical professional.

"Our society places the greatest level of trust and confidence in its public safety providers, and the circumstances in this case reflect a tremendous breach of that faith. The victim in this incident demonstrated enormous strength and courage in bringing this complaint forward," he said.

Subliminal Message In Porn? Michigan Man Suspects Terrorist Message In XXX Movie

We've all heard the rumors (and seen the "proof") of animators slipping subliminal pornographic images in Disney movies. But what about subliminal messages in porn itself?

In Mason, a small town near Lansing, Mich., police officers received a surprising call on Jan. 1 from a man who said he received subliminal messages from a pornographic movie he purchased in nearby Jackson.

The Lansing State Journal reprinted the titillating police report, which states:

The complainant replayed the portion of the DVD in slow motion for the officer, who did note four words he could read and a series of other words that passed so quickly they could not be read.

The complainant stated he reported the incident only because he had read where Al Qaeda was inserting messages into pornographic movies.

With so much left to the imagination, it's easy to let the mind run wild on what dangerous messages might be passed through the nation's pornography. Could al Qaeda really be involved? Osama bin Laden, after all, was found to have quite the stash of pornography at his Pakistani compound.

As of Jan. 6, the case is still under investigation, the Mason Police Department's Secretary to the Chief Jann Lifsey told HuffPost.

Perhaps Mason is a hotbed of pornographic subliminal messaging? Does this incident echo any recent crimes in the city?

"Not that I remember," Lifsey said.

To read the full report, see the Lansing State Journal.
